3 Ways Educators Can Embrace Social Media to Increase Engagement

3 Ways Educators Can Embrace Social Media to Increase Engagement | Educational Use of Social Media | Scoop.it
You don’t often see social media and the classroom mentioned together in the same sentence — unless it’s to say one doesn’t have a place in the other. The reality is social media is engrained in all we do. In spite of that, only 13 percent of K–12 teachers were reported by Education Week’s Market Brief to use social media in the classroom.

The latest statistics from MDR’s State of the K–12 Market 2015 report show that 21 percent of school districts have implemented a bring-your-own-device policy, and that number is only expected to rise.

So, powered by increased mobile devices in the classroom, what if we brought social media out of the shadows and used it for learning? The possibilities for engagement with parents and the community abound as well.

Here are a few ways educators can use social media to engage with parents and students this school year.

How to Use Facebook Live for Learning: 5 outcomes, 4 things to remember, 4 mistakes to avoid, 1 great video | Educational Use of Social Media | Scoop.it
It's no secret that livestreaming video that can be viewed later, is an incredibly powerful learning tool. In fact @MarkBarnes19 explained in this #HackLearning podcast, that livestreaming has the potential to break down the walls of school.

The problem is that despite we know this is true, it hasn't. The question is why?

The answer...

Because it's not that simple. Regardless of the platform, there are a lot of confusing little details. A Google Hangout on Air requires "7 Not So Simple Steps." There are platforms like UStream and Livestream, but still, not so simple and not so intuitive for others to find. Some people use Skype add-ons and equipment to record, but add-ons and equipment are not that simple.

But, there's good news. That has all changed.

Facebook Live puts the simple into livestreaming. Seriously! If you can write a Facebook post, you can "Go Live!" Here's how:

How teachers can use Twitter in education?

Twitter is thought to be a social networking platform where individuals share their thought and connect with the entire world including the aspiring things they aim for. You can be quite surprised after coming to know that Twitter has marvellous opportunities to co- function with teachers making a paradigm in the education sector and beyond.

Manuela Mejia's curator insight, September 21, 2016 11:11 PM
Some people think that social networks are not suitable for academic purposes; however, what this article suggests is that teachers can encourage students to use Twitter as a learning platform in which learners and teachers share information about topics related with the academic field. As a teacher in development, I think that we can use almost all the tools that technology gave us, but it is very important that first we teach students how to use them. It is also important that teachers use personal and professional account since you do not want that students know things about your personal life, or maybe you do not want that you family and friends follow things related with their job.

I consider that teachers can create an special section in which students talk about the Tweets that are interesting for them, or maybe make an activity like a reading circle, a debate or a speech in which the students get extra points because it helps that students focus on reading the suggested material and not only looking for the profile accounts of their friends.
