When Job Descriptions Lie: The Real Demands of Every Position

Barry Deutsch's curator insight, January 9, 8:07 AM

Using traditional job descriptions listing what you want people to have when the show up for work their first day is worthless.

It doesn't define success, it doesn't describe what the real job is, and it is an inadequate tool for predicting and managing future performance.

A better approach is a success-based definition of work - we call this a Success Factor Snapshot in our Success Factor Methodology for Hiring. The Snapshot is a precise definition of what must be accomplished in the role at what quantifiable standard of performance.

How badly does your job description tell lies about the job?

He estado leyendo FOCUS.

This is a question that I have wondered about. While this graphic gives an abbreviated, visual response to the question, it provides key insights into the issue.

The image cleverly illustrates the signs of narcissism before depicting the negative effects of social media, which include ADHD, depression and narcissistic personality disorder and addiction, among others.

It would be interesting to know the reasons WHY "People who use Facebook the most tend to have more narcissistic or insecure personalities" and why "those who [score] higher in narcissism also posted more often on twitter". While this post points out yet another important issue surrounding social media that cannot be ignored by business professionals and users alike, it does not provide enough information for the reasoning behind its statements.

Study by Cirrus shows: HR lacks skills to justify a Business Case for Talent.

Four key steps to a more effective and connected approach on assessing the ROI of talent:
- Convert intangible assets into tangible outcomes (Strategy Map)
- Cooperate with Finance to connect people and financial metrics
- Develop skills and capability in traditional and financial metrics
- Adopt HR technology and develop a data-driven HR function

Thinking about Steve Jobs and Jeff Bezos, and Empathy (or Lack Thereof) -- (insight from Daniel Goleman)

Thinking about Steve Jobs and Jeff Bezos, and Empathy (or Lack Thereof) -- (insight from Daniel Goleman) | Recursos humanos | Scoop.it

A few days ago, Diane Rehm interviewed Daniel Goleman, prompted by the release of his new book, Focus: The Hidden Driver Of Excellence.

Ms. Rehm perked up when Mr. Goleman mentioned empathy.  Here is what he said:

Well, empathy requires three things because there are three kinds of empathy, and actually each one of them draws on a different brain system. One kind of empathy is cognitive empathy, which means I understand how you think about things, how you perceive. You need that for a real dialogue, for true conversation. The other kind of empathy is emotional empathy, feeling with the person. And a third kind of empathy is empathic concern. When someone is in need, when someone is suffering, you feel for them. You want to help them. And I think that real health, particularly mental health is having all three.

And later in the hour, Mr. Goleman made this comment to a caller. We have a mechanism in the brain which will close down empathy so you can think clearly.
