January is the time of year when people make decisions to make positive changes to their life. Resolutions from keeping fit to taking driving lessons, spending more time with family to learning something new all inspire people to take action. Looking for a new job or career move also tops the list. According to a survey from Glassdoor, 22% of employees look for a new role in January. The Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) have also reported that 37% of workers plan to leave at some point in 2015. January 5th 2015 was dubbed as ‘Massive Monday’ in the recruitment industry, even building up enough momentum online to trend on Twitter with its own hashtag #MassiveMonday. Job boards reported a massive rise in applicants as ‘thousands’ looked for a new job. The survey carried out by ILM shows an increase in workers looking to change jobs in previous years. Previous studies reported that in 2014, 19% planned to move jobs, up from 13% in 2013. In the UK, there are now more jobs available than ever before, with the recruitment industry literally booming. Say the words ‘gender gap’ and many may recoil in shock. Gender inequalities don’t exist in the 20th century surely? Or if they do, nowhere near as much as they used to right? I, for one thought that the inequalities between the male and female of the species had narrowed in recent years and that there was more women working in IT than ever before. I was wrong – apparently.

There are an increasing number of teenagers who are developing, designing and coding their way to success, becoming tech CEOs in their own right. Teenagers born around the turn of the century have been surrounded by tech since birth. They can’t imagine life before the mobile phone, laptop and video games. Being absorbed in digital media from such an early age has resulted in them being incredibly tech savvy. Michael Sayman from Florida, now 17 started making money off mobile phone apps at the age of 13 (just 18 months after Apple opened the app store). They didn’t teach programming at his school, so he taught himself with online tutorials. Sayman had built a website using WordPress, promoting gaming tips for his favourite game, Disney’s Club Penguin; a virtual online world with mass players and avatars, set in a winter wonderland. Although his site was generating traffic, he wanted to increase it. He built a basic app linking to the site with hints and tips which cost just $1 to download. At first he thought his app was ‘stupid.’ However, it started generating money straightaway and ended up in the top ten downloads. Sayman ended up building another app, 4Snaps ...

A study ‘keeping an eye on recruiter behaviour’ describes how the first quantitative study of its kind used eye-tracking behavioural technology to assess and analyze the focus of a person when ‘digesting information or completing activities.’ In the study, 30 professional recruiters took part over a ten week period. The findings furnished the researchers with definitive data including individual CVs, precise items (words or phrases) which caught the recruiter’s attention, time spent viewing each item, speed of eyes moving from each item and content which was unnoticed.
