The prevalent approach to sustainability is still missing a key ingredient: nature itself.According to Kellert, biophilic design has to make sense in context, and it must make sense culturally. The six elements of biophilic design are:

"The driver has been studies that help validate what a lot of designers feel intuitively." Well thank god for research!

As a culture, we need science to validate our feelings...too bad we no longer trust our inherent intuition, as indigenous cultures once did.

Biophilic Urban Acupuncture: The Importance of Biophilia in Urban Places | ReConnecting to Nature | Scoop.it
Biophilic urban acupuncture aims to reconnect people to nature by using targeted biophilic interventions in urban environments for better health outcomes.
Maureen Calamia's insight:

I love the idea of "urban acupuncture." We use this term in feng shui to describe what we do - essentially, the same as what is outlined in this blog - create more harmony and balance in the environment to promote wellbeing.

I love E.O. Wilson and his common-sense approach to life in the 21st century. HalfEarth? Great idea but not convinced that could ever happen. But he is absolutely right that something BIG will have to happen.

Coffee Break? Walk in the Park? Why Unwinding Is Hard | ReConnecting to Nature | Scoop.it
What you do during a mental break determines how helpful that pause will be, research shows. A walk in the woods can do wonders. A walk in the busy city, not so much.
Maureen Calamia's insight:

Just highlighting that to improve attention and concentration, a break viewing images of nature is actually better than a walk in the city! Of course, taking a walk in nature is best :)

Beyond Positive Distraction: Biophilic Engagement in Healthcare Spaces – Part I
Maureen Calamia's insight:

This is powerful stuff. #SkyFactory is on the cutting edge of biophilic design.

"Distracting a restless mind does not reduce its level of activity—it replaces one form of content for another—whereas the visual content in biophilic illusions does reduce mental agitation as the observer resonates with the illusion’s perceived spatial properties as well as the positive emotional content."

Happy May Day, which used to be green instead of red

Happy May Day, which used to be green instead of red | ReConnecting to Nature | Scoop.it
How a day originally celebrating fertility and life became International Workers Day and something else in America.
Maureen Calamia's insight:

Happy #MayDay! I went to 13 years of Catholic school, and I do recall actually celebrating May Day once, at school, with the Maypole ritual. I remember it so well! It was so much fun! Singing songs, we had two groups going in opposite circles around the Maypole. With ribbons in hand, interweaving our ribbons around the pole.

But, alas, one of the priests must have poo-pooed it and we never did it again.

The, as an adult, I was invited to a Beltane celebration and got to do it again, with my children! Magical!

Please take a few minutes to notice all of the gorgeous, bountiful flowers, the variety and vividness of color and life!

And check out this cool, historical account of May Day celebrations. Thanks #Treehugger!
