Avoiding unintentional plagiarism... Digitally Ready

My paper on the project What did I do wrong? Supporting independent learning practices to avoid plagiarism was well received in Manchester last week at LILAC... It is not a “how to reference” or even a “how to avoid plagiarism” project but rather embedded within the wider context of the fundamental academic principles of independent critical thinking, supported by appropriate and properly cited evidence from evaluated sources which is especially crucial in avoiding unintentional plagiarism.

The World’s Largest Repository of Free Online Learning Tutorials

The World’s Largest Repository of Free Online Learning Tutorials | School Libraries and the importance of remaining current. | Scoop.it

Here’s a common scenario. Someone emails and asks about an elearning tutorial I have on the blog. It’s not always easy to find the specific tutorial buried in a given post. In fact, there are many times I either forgot that I had created that tutorial or I can’t recall where it’s at either. I know. It’s part of getting older.

Today I am going to fix that. I have listed every blog post that has a video tutorial that shows how to create something related to online learning. So, if you’re just getting started with building online learning courses (or new to the blog), now you have a handy resource with links to all sorts of rapid elearning tutorials.

Curation was not a hot topic back in 2008 when Clay Shirky observed, "It's not information overload. It's filter failure."

Now curation is becoming a way for indidividuals to share their expert interests and for all of us to assemble an expert's gallery of human curated topics that we want to follow.

Is curation, the answer to the 'fact' of information overload?

Deborah Welsh's curator insight, April 1, 2013 7:50 PM

Lisa Nielsen: The Innovative Educator: 6 free ways to capture student responses without costly clickers

Lisa Nielsen: The Innovative Educator: 6 free ways to capture student responses without costly clickers | School Libraries and the importance of remaining current. | Scoop.it

"Most educators are familiar with student response systems (SRS) a.k.a. clickers. Common brands are eInstruction, Sentio, TurningPoint, Activote. Those who use the systems know they run about $2,500 - $4,000 (depending on various options selected) for a class set and allow educators to track student learning, engage an entire class as they collect real-time responses from students, and enable them to quickly assess understanding and achievement. While these are valuable instructional outcomes, clickers are costly and the distribution, collection, and maintenance of devices is rather cumbersome. In many cases using them requires training to figure out how to upload the software, input questions, maneuver from one question to the next and share answers.

Here’s the thing. You don’t spend money and professional development time to purchase clickers. You can capture student’s thoughts and ideas for free using whatever device they have whether it’s a dumb phone, tablet, or  laptop. "

Six Steps for Planning a Successful Project

David Grant, who guides the school's technology integration and curriculum development, has put together a six-step rubric for designing a project. He says Fading Footprints, which became a model for King and Expeditionary Learning Schools, doesn't take an entire school, or even a team of twelve, to plan and carry out; one or two teachers can tailor this one to fit their time and resources.
