Why Kids Must Be Taught Digital Manners Infographic

Why Kids Must Be Taught Digital Manners Infographic | School Libraries and the importance of remaining current. | Scoop.it

Teaching students the importance of having and using manners is nothing new to teachers. However, what has changed is the type of etiquette kids needs today—namely, the digital kind. True, please, thank you and excuse me are still significant, but in addition to these basics, students growing up in this ever-connected, social media crazed world require much more. Concepts such as online privacy, sharing and creating a positive digital footprint through the demonstration of responsible online behaviors are just as vital.

Hypocrisy in the Profession of Education

Hypocrisy in the Profession of Education | School Libraries and the importance of remaining current. | Scoop.it
Whenever I think of a teacher, I also think of a scholar. It has always been apparent to me that if one is to be an effective teacher, one must continually learn. Of course that is not always a pat...

As educators we must be learners first. If we are to be better educators, we must first be better learners. We may not always have a choice in what we learn.

After so long not being involved with learning, many educators do not know how much they do not know.

===> How can they make decisions on what they need to learn, if they are unaware of the existence of many of the things they need to know? <===

===> To be better educators, we first need to be better learners. <===

The biggest hypocrisy of the Education Profession is that the educators too often have become poor learners ===> unwilling to leave their comfort zones to improve their learning. <===

Agree. Teachers must be open minded and willing to learn more and more , (a lifetime edeavour , )to kep up and be equiped to teach well their "pupils" on overall advances bat specially their field of expertize ! Be up to date all the time to teach well and really enjoy what they do . I know I have been a teacher in the past .

Ofsted | Improving literacy in secondary schools: a shared responsibility

Ofsted | Improving literacy in secondary schools: a shared responsibility | School Libraries and the importance of remaining current. | Scoop.it
Elizabeth Hutchinson's insight:

“In every school in the survey there were successful measures to involve the library and ensure that the librarian had an important role in developing reading. This is common sense, building on the specialist knowledge that librarians possess. Where librarians are fully integrated into the management structure of the school, they have an opportunity to influence debate and to enhance the library’s contribution to pupils’ progress. Many of the imaginative programmes to encourage reading that inspectors see are inspired by a good librarian.”

Ofsted has finally realised that Librarians are important! Yippee

Five Search Engines You Can Use to Search the Deep Web | School Libraries and the importance of remaining current. | Scoop.it

Unlike pages on the visible Web (that is, the Web that you can access from search engines and directories), information in the Deep Web is just not visible to the software spiders and crawlers that create search engine indexes. Since this information makes up the vast majority of available content on the Web, we are potentially missing out on some pretty amazing resources.

Getting Kids Engaged with Primary Sources | Cool Tools by Richard Byrne | The Digital Shift

Getting Kids Engaged with Primary Sources | Cool Tools by Richard Byrne | The Digital Shift | School Libraries and the importance of remaining current. | Scoop.it

"I vividly remember being disappointed during my first year of teaching: my students weren’t nearly as excited about primary source documents as I was. Primary source documents, as you know, offer readers a unique, real-world perspective, and I thought my kids would love delving into them. I soon learned that my disappointing results weren’t due to the documents that I’d selected, but rather how I was having students use them. That first year, they weren’t doing anything but reading them. Today, Web-based tools enable students to discover more primary sources than ever before and engage them in dynamic ways. The following items are some of my favorites."
