Test-Based Teacher Evaluation Earns an F, Again* | National Education Policy Center

Test-based reforms to teacher evaluation, pay, and retention have no place at the education reform table in SC since there is no evidence it is needed or that it works. To pursue test-based teacher evaluation while the state continues to struggle economically and educationally is an inexcusable failure of state leadership.

Bloomberg: Schools Will 'Call Every Single Parent' For Teacher Ratings

Bloomberg: Schools Will 'Call Every Single Parent' For Teacher Ratings | Realschoolreform | Scoop.it
Parents of New York, beware: The mayor will be calling you. New York's state legislature passed a law Thursday that would prevent school districts from publishing teachers' performance scores for all the world to see.

Another attack on teachers from a mayor who will not release the evaluation of his top education staff! The corporate tie of teacher evaluations to tests is fraught with error.

Even Bill "privatize schools" Gates has been quoted as saying that public shaming is wrong on all sorts of levels.  Bill give Mayor Bloomberg a call!

Making more than symbolic change in our schools

Making more than symbolic change in our schools | Realschoolreform | Scoop.it
The history of district-driven reforms is littered with symbolic actions, few of which have actually worked. Let's make sure that the discussion about time in school is not one of those symbolic actions.

Matt Taibbi and Yves Smith on the Follies of Big Banks and Government | Moyers & Company | BillMoyers.com | Realschoolreform | Scoop.it
Matt Taibbi and Yves Smith join Bill to discuss how the folly and corruption of both banks and government leaves deep wounds in our democracy.

The shocking story of a corruption in the financial and political system.  These are real world GANGSTERS!  The theft, loan sharking, rigging of bond auctions, bribing...

Also read how the rigging of bond auctions steals taxpayer money across America!  Less money for schools and public education.  Our pensions are affected.   Kudos to Matt Taibbi!

Save Our Schools Webinar/Fundraiser Keeping Hope Alive in Kids and Teachers as We Battle Back Against the Corporate Agenda: Friday, June 29, 2012  8:00 PM - 9:30 PM EDT

Please Join Us, Jonathan Kozol, and guest moderator, Anthony Cody for an all-day Fundraiser and evening Webinar.

Educator, Writer, and Activist Jonathan Kozol will offer his thoughts on The Fire In The Ashes and how we Keep Hope Alive in Kids and Teachers as We Battle Back Against the Corporate Agenda. He will focus on…
(1) The damage done to children by the testing mania.

(2) The damage done to the morale of teachers by a regiment of punitive accountability that judges them by the test scores of their students and gives them no reward for creativity or for awakening the curiosity, originality, and critical capacities of children.

(3) The shameful inequality between rich schools and poor, and the virtually total segregation of black and Hispanic children, which sends a message to those kids that they are outcasts and have little value in the eyes of our society.

For more than two weeks, the University of Virginia has been in an uproar over the abrupt resignation of school President Teresa Sullivan.

With bipartisan support for the idea that the accumulation of piles of money connotes expertise, analysts say they now fear that universities will become beholden to the same mindset.

Schools Matter: "Exclusive" NCTQ Bullshit from the Associated Press

Here is a great lesson in how the corporate ed reform message gets disseminated through the corporate media. The National Council for Teacher Quality has been an advocacy group for corporate education reformers since 2000, and it really got going with the help of some early discretionary grants in the multiple millions from Rod Paige's Education Department.

Even though NCTQ was busted in an ED Inspector General's report for misusing federal funds to seed Bush Administration propaganda in national op-ed pages (remember Armstrong Williams?), Kate Walsh and her group of propagandists at NCTQ have flourished in recent years, with a little help from friends of the Business Roundtable.

Chicago Teachers Union | The Ricketts Effect: Billionaire intrigue, Political Deception and the fight for the soul of the Chicago Public Schools.

Chicago Teachers Union | The Ricketts Effect: Billionaire intrigue, Political Deception and the fight for the soul of the Chicago Public Schools. | Realschoolreform | Scoop.it

Now that Chicagoans are gaining awareness about the wolves in sheep clothing in our midst and how Initiatives funded by the 1 percent are vying for our hearts and minds, the fight for our schools takes on a new light.[14] The Chicago Teachers Union represents 30,000 educators who have lived and taught in Chicago for their professional lives and this year is the union’s 75th anniversary. It’s no wonder that Chicagoans by a two to one margin in a recent Tribune poll trust their teachers more than the Mayor’s Ed Reform pretenders, to improve our schools.[15] Teachers have deeper roots in their communities and honestly represent their outrage at the district’s refusal to lower class size, respect experience in the classroom, provide art, music, P.E. and world language to our students and properly staff schools with social workers, nurses, counselors and school psychologists. It is a travesty that as our city continues to suffer from record levels of violence and homicide while the powers- that- be cut vital services for our children and their schools.[16] The best reforms help to secure our future and stabilize the present. Will the real reformers please stand up!

Maybe it's Time to Ask the Teachers?

We have never heard more policy rhetoric about developing, recruiting and retaining strong teachers. Ironically, our policies have also never done more to ensure that good teachers have little incentive to serve and stay in those schools.

The teachers and members of the Chicago Teachers Union spoke loudly on the strike authorization vote, that they are NOT being listened to.  In behooves me on why the classroom teachers, special ed teachers and specialists are not engaged seriously in building a better public school system.  Teachers unions need to organize now.  Be vigilant!

Schools Matter: Krash Course #10: NCTQ's Gradual Unmasking

NCTQ offers no credible agenda or scholarship worthy of reforming teacher education. But this ideological think tank is a disturbing example of all that is wrong with the current education reform movement that has allowed people without experience or expertise as educators to perpetuate an education reform agenda through the weight of money, political influence, and media compliance.
