What's Wrong With Standardized Tests? | FairTest

The only objective part of most standardized tests is scoring, when done by an accurately programmed machine. Deciding what items to include on the test, how questions are worded, which answers are scored as "correct,” how the test is administered, and the uses of exam results are all made by subjective human beings.

Parents United for Responsible Education » Blog Archive » Parents describe Chicago Board of Education disrespect | Realschoolreform | Scoop.it

We are often asked if we feel the board and the mayor are listening to parents and we always reply no. If the board cared what we had to say, meetings would start with public participation to ensure that everyone who made the effort to attend could be heard. If the mayor cared, he would meet with parent groups and speak with us directly, not address us at staged press conferences or through carefully drafted media releases.

Our belief in the basic rights of students extends to their teachers as well. If teachers are to teach our children effectively, we can’t expect them to do so without a framework that supports their dignity and gives them what they need to do the job right.

Teacher X: CPS FY 2013 budget quick look

Teacher X: CPS FY 2013 budget quick look | Realschoolreform | Scoop.it

"Why is this important?
Due to poor management of taxpayer dollars, CPS manufactures its own budget crisis every year. This results in worse educational supports for the vast majority of students while privatizing options continue to be increasingly supported. There is no scientific justification for these priorities; rather it is a strategy for manufactured crisis to force policy rather than the best interests of students driving policy and resource allocation. My hope is that this work will motivate the development of a people’s budget movement in Chicago Public Schools to oppose the current corporate structure.
9 quick things about the current budget and then some explanations:"

Op-Ed: Virtual Charter Schools Raise Real Questions for Education in New Jersey

Op-Ed: Virtual Charter Schools Raise Real Questions for Education in New Jersey | Realschoolreform | Scoop.it
Where's the evidence that virtual charters will outperform their 'brick and mortar' equivalents?

"So, while Cerf shuts down Emily Fisher for poor academic performance and low graduation rates, he is intent upon opening virtual charter schools that empirically have poor academic performance and low graduation rates. That three of the proposed virtual charter schools have contracts with the for-profit company K-12, Inc. is another red flag. K-12, Inc. has been closely scrutinized for their poor performance and fiscal mismanagement, while making profits for their investors"

How Standardized Testing Damages Education (Updated July 2012) | FairTest

Aren't these valid uses of test scores?

Measurement experts agree that no test is good enough to serve as the sole or primary basis for any of these important educational decisions. A nine-year study by the National Research Council (2011) concluded that the emphasis on testing yielded little learning progress but caused significant harm.

Cawley insisted that charters must be effective because “they have waiting lines’’ and 12 percent of the student population chooses to go to them.

However, CTU researcher Sarah Haines [sic] questioned how many charters really had waiting lines as CPS documents indicate that charter enrollment was “lower than projected’’ this year.

For a well educated person, Cawley did not provide any evidence, or data to use their parlance, to back up his claim regarding charter schools.  The no research, no data COO... of CPS
