Chicago Teachers Union | CPS Steps Back from Longest School Day

Chicago Teachers Union | CPS Steps Back from Longest School Day | Realschoolreform | Scoop.it

The Chicago Teachers Union bargaining committee today accepted an interim agreement that many thought impossible: The Chicago Public Schools has finally backed off the unworkable seven-hour 40 minute teacher work day and instead will make only modest increases in the length of teacher work days. CPS thus reverses its publicly-announced policy that the CTU has consistently criticized as bad for both students and teachers. CPS will staff the longer student day by hiring nearly 500 new teaching positions, and it has finally agreed to recall rights for teachers. Tenured teachers displaced in 2010, 2011 and 2012 will constitute the pool from which principals must hire the new teachers.

Cawley insisted that charters must be effective because “they have waiting lines’’ and 12 percent of the student population chooses to go to them.

However, CTU researcher Sarah Haines [sic] questioned how many charters really had waiting lines as CPS documents indicate that charter enrollment was “lower than projected’’ this year.

For a well educated person, Cawley did not provide any evidence, or data to use their parlance, to back up his claim regarding charter schools.  The no research, no data COO... of CPS

Chicago Teachers Union | The Ricketts Effect: Billionaire intrigue, Political Deception and the fight for the soul of the Chicago Public Schools. | Realschoolreform | Scoop.it

Now that Chicagoans are gaining awareness about the wolves in sheep clothing in our midst and how Initiatives funded by the 1 percent are vying for our hearts and minds, the fight for our schools takes on a new light.[14] The Chicago Teachers Union represents 30,000 educators who have lived and taught in Chicago for their professional lives and this year is the union’s 75th anniversary. It’s no wonder that Chicagoans by a two to one margin in a recent Tribune poll trust their teachers more than the Mayor’s Ed Reform pretenders, to improve our schools.[15] Teachers have deeper roots in their communities and honestly represent their outrage at the district’s refusal to lower class size, respect experience in the classroom, provide art, music, P.E. and world language to our students and properly staff schools with social workers, nurses, counselors and school psychologists. It is a travesty that as our city continues to suffer from record levels of violence and homicide while the powers- that- be cut vital services for our children and their schools.[16] The best reforms help to secure our future and stabilize the present. Will the real reformers please stand up!
