First Reality Television Show.

First Reality Television Show. | Reality Television | Scoop.it
Smile, You're on the Candid Camera Web site - This is the official web site for television's most watched reality show. Hosted by Peter Funt and Dina Eastwood
Sharon Nzuki's insight:

I chose this source because it explores Candid Camera which was the first Reality Television.

Allen Funt, with his 1948 TV series Candid Camera is often credited as reality TV's first practitioner. In fact, he started a year earlier with Candid Microphone on radio. Truth or Consequences started in 1950 and frequently used secret cameras. Both of these two pioneering series created artificial realties to see how ordinary people would respond; the reality series of today borrow a lot from these precedents and differ mostly in scope and locale.

The Economics Of Reality TV.

Sharon Nzuki's insight:

I chose this source because it gives us an in-depth critique on the economics behind reality tv.

The abundance of Reality Television shows today is because they are inexpensive to produce than a one-hour drama or a 30-minute sitcom. Lead writers are replaced with “story editors” who do less and are paid less. No high-salaried actors - just a host (maybe) and the people who've contracted to be in the show.  Many of these shows are viewed by millions of people daily. Advertisers and producers respond to these numbers to maximize profits gained.

Our unhealthy love of reality TV bullying

Our unhealthy love of reality TV bullying | Reality Television | Scoop.it
We love watching bullies on reality TV, but psychologists worry that the glorification of such bad behavior can hurt our health.
Sharon Nzuki's insight:

Ichose this source becasue it highlights the levels of aggresion and bullying in reality TV shows.

There are mind- numbing statistics on the effect of reality Tv on people 's behavior. It stood out to me that studies show that people who watched aggressive and violent behavior on TV as kids were more likely to be aggressive, hit their spouses and engage in other inappropriate behavior later in life. Most people mimick what they see on reality TV shows in their lives and relations with other people. In my opinion , people should only watch and learn not to make these mistakes.

Psychologist Links Reality TV With Teen Cosmetic Surgery | Media Relations

Psychologist Links Reality TV With Teen Cosmetic Surgery | Media Relations | Reality Television | Scoop.it
Sharon Nzuki's insight:

I chose this source because it explores the effects of Reality TV shows on teenagers.

Teenagers counter with peer pressure to be pretty and thin. So what happens when an unrealistic standard of beauty is reinforced by the reality TV stars they look up to? They would want to have plastic surgery to “fit-in”.

Parents should steer their children in the right direction when choosing what type of reality TV shows to watch. They need to teach children to be critical of the messages they are receiving from reality TV shows, and tell them positive things to foster their self-esteem.

Sharon Nzuki's insight:

The show has broken several ratings records on both A&E and cable television as a whole; the fourth season premiere drew 11.8 million viewers, the most-watched nonfiction cable telecast in history.

“Thanks to its authentic and engaging characters ‘Duck Dynasty’ has become more than just a reality show, it is a cultural phenomenon,” said David McKillop, General Manager and Executive Vice President of A&E.  “We would like to thank the Robertsons for their incredible partnership.  We are all Happy, Happy, Happy.”

I chose this source to give my audience a sneak peak of Duck Dynasty. The episode is poised to be the #1 show on television, broadcast or cable.

Sub-genres Of Reality TV.

Sub-genres Of Reality TV. | Reality Television | Scoop.it
Sharon Nzuki's insight:

I chose this source because it talks about the different sub genres of reality TV.

Any producer would define reality television with a certain genre, to help scope out potential. However, there is a lot of potential for disagreement with such assessments, since the judgment is subjective.

While many would argue that there are anywhere from twelve to thirty different types of reality television subgenres, most of these subgenres would be hybrids; combinations of two more subgenres.

Positive impact of Reality TV.

Channel surfers across the country are finding it difficult to avoid a reality television program. Many people say these shows possess no redeeming value and are simply blatant voyeurism.
Sharon Nzuki's insight:

Reality TV is very entertaining.  While some are masked as being geared toward creativity, such as Project Runway and those kind of fun cooking shows, at the end of the day it is the drama which draws us in. "These shows are distracting from today's tragic events and give viewers an outlet for watching others overcome hardships, escape danger, live in a rainforest, learn to survive under the roughest conditions, and yes, find love." These shows are entertaining to people who are just looking for mere entertainment. There are two sides to everything. I chose this source because it examines the good side of reality TV.
