NYC to Appeal Soda Ban Ruling, Miss. Forbids Such Bans

NYC to Appeal Soda Ban Ruling, Miss. Forbids Such Bans | REAL World Wellness | Scoop.it
New York City will appeal a judge's ruling against its ban on extra-large sugary drinks, the mayor's office announced Monday; meanwhile, legislators in Mississippi are making sure towns in their state...
Dr Veronica Anderson's insight:

Mississippi is the state with the distinction of having the highest percentage of unhealthy citizens.

Banning soda will do the opposite of increasing the healthfulness of NY citizens. People with unhealthful habits will continue to get whatever necessary to feed their likes and everyone hates being treated like a child andbeing told what to do so I think there will be an uptick of health issues in the population that the law is trying to "protect" against themselves.

For Traumatized Caregivers, Therapy Helps

For Traumatized Caregivers, Therapy Helps | REAL World Wellness | Scoop.it
Therapists said they often encountered symptoms of trauma among caregivers, even though research documenting this phenomenon is scarce.
Dr Veronica Anderson's insight:

Working with someone who can help people work out their emotions of helplessness and guilt does work. However, few people are willing to seek help as they feel that they are admitting that they are "crazy" or "weak".

Whereas therapy is a great idea, many financially straped families and caregivers do not have the funds available for the luxury of therapy.

Stroke Risk Not Lowered With Antioxidants - Health News - redOrbit | REAL World Wellness | Scoop.it
According to a new study, taking in as many antioxidants as possible may not be the sure fire way to avoid dementia and strokes as it was previously thought.
Dr Veronica Anderson's insight:

Not all antioxidants are created equal. Most people in this study received their antioxidants from coffee and tea verses other sources of anitoxidants such as berries.

I recommend an eating strategy in which antioxidant come from multiple sources verses just a few. This means that eaters must increase the variety of foods in their diet which tend to be a hard sell to older individuals who are more set in their likes and dislikes.

Gluten-Free, Whether You Need It or Not

Gluten-Free, Whether You Need It or Not | REAL World Wellness | Scoop.it
Avoiding gluten, a protein found in wheat, is a must for those with celiac disease, but many people are self-diagnosing and going gluten-free in a bid for a healthy diet.
Dr Veronica Anderson's insight:

Its worth being tested for all the foods that have gluten. Many find that they are allergic to one or 2 rather than everything with gluten. That is the case with a few of my family members. Food allergies are a big deal because they may manifest as something different than a digestive issue or a rash or restrictive breathing. The inflammation of body organs caused by a food allergy may lead to other serious disorders such as thyroid disease and mental illness as serious as major depression, bipolar and schizophrenia.

Laser Treatment of Eye Conditions

Laser Treatment of Eye Conditions | REAL World Wellness | Scoop.it
A laser is an intense, focused beam of light that can heat and destroy human tissue. Since the 1960’s, focused, carefully controlled lasers have been used for the treatment of human eye diseases.
Dr Veronica Anderson's insight:

Here is my first hand personal experience as both an eye surgeon and a patient of eye surgery.

People commonly ask me about laser eye surgery especially to throw away your glasses and contacts however we use lasers form many conditions and people's eyesignt thousands of times a day around the world.

The top conditions that eye surgeons (like me) treat are diabetic eye disease and glaucoma as well as macular degeneration. The best qualities of laser are 1-its painless 2-it can be done quickly in an office/out patient environment.

For me speaking both as an eye surgeoon who has peformed many and a person who has had LASIK several years ago, lasers are remarkable medical advancements that have improved and saved the vision of millions. As far as I am concerned, having LASIK is one of the best things I have ever done and it was an interesting experience having a procedure while I was awake and knowing exactly what was happening every moment of the procedure. Although I had had my patients marvel instantly after the procedure, it was an amazing feeling to get up off the operatin table and see so clearly that the world took on a different meaning. My vision was clearer than it had ever been with either glasses or contact lenses and I had been corrected to 20/15 with contacts which is better than 20/20.

AS with any procedure there are risks., Although laser eye surgery is generally very very safe, it still carries with it the risk of loss of vision or loss of the eye. The benefits generally outweigh the risks however speak with you eye surgeon and decide what is right for your particular set of peepers.

Soybean Oil: Another Harmful Ingredient in Processed Foods

Soybean Oil: Another Harmful Ingredient in Processed Foods | REAL World Wellness | Scoop.it
High-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) and hydrogenated soybean oil are some of the most harmful ingredients in processed foods that contribute to poor health.
Dr Veronica Anderson's insight:

Perhaps its a good health choice to avoid soybean and all its related products. That includes tofu.

Why?

Two of the most harmful ingredients in processed foods are high fructose corn syrup and soybean oil, whether partially hydrogenated, organic, or made from newer soybean varieties modified in such a way as to not require hydrogenationCompletely unnatural man-made fats created through the partial hydrogenation process cause dysfunction and chaos in your body on a cellular level, and studies have linked trans-fats to health problems ranging from obesity and diabetes to reproductive problems and heart diseaseBesides the health hazards related to the trans fats created by the partial hydrogenation process, soybean oil is, in and of itself, NOT a healthy oil.Add to that the fact that the majority of soybeans grown in the US is genetically engineered, and as a result saturated with dangerous levels of the herbicide glyphosate which may have additional health consequences as there are no long term safety studies. When taken together, partially hydrogenated GE soybean oil becomes one of the absolute worst types of oils you can consume. The genetically engineered (GE) variety planted on over 90 percent of US soy acres is Roundup Ready engineered to survive being doused with otherwise lethal amounts of Monsanto's Roundup herbicide (glyphosate). GE soybeans have been found to contain residue levels as high as 17 mg/kg, and malformations in frog and chicken embryos have occurred at just over 2 mg/kg.

Fathers & Daughters: 'Father hunger' haunts abandoned daughters | REAL World Wellness | Scoop.it

Dr Veronica Anderson's insight:

In our cultures, we rarely focus on the importance on the relatonship between fathers and daughters. Perhaps it time we start paying much more attention to strenghtening the bond because it appears that having a solid functional relationship between father and daughter is perhaps the lifeblood of a girl becoming a healthy and well adjusted mother, lover and friend.

Dr Veronica Anderson's insight:

Money does buy happiness. But is it other people's money or money that we worked for or does it even matter?

Americans are better off but are unhappy as a whole because of the comparison that we make to the rich and famous. Also, I believe that Americans expect more opportunity and equality when it comes to having money.

Piers Morgan Falls Ill Days After Public Flu Shot with Dr. Oz

Piers Morgan Falls Ill Days After Public Flu Shot with Dr. Oz | REAL World Wellness | Scoop.it
Piers Morgan has now developed flu-like symptoms after publicly receiving a flu shot from Dr. Oz., attributing the sickness to the shot.
Dr Veronica Anderson's insight:

Begin to question all health recommendation made by the "authorities."

The important take away message here is to arm yourself against the flu in other ways rather than taking the flu vaccine. The flu vaccine actually is an injection of flu virus into your body either as a live attentuated (less strong) virus or a "dead" virus.

Common since would dictate that many will fall ill from getting the flu injected into their body.

What can you do instead? Eat to boost your immune system by adding in such foods as weet potatotes, mushrooms and garlic. Fresh organic varieties that are non GMO are always best. Consider natural herbal immune boosters. There are many which are used in ancient but effective forms of medicine such as Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda. Consider that both these forms of medicine come from parts of the world with population above 1.3 billion and growing.

Next, if you become ill-go to an acupuncturist. They have methods that seem to work. In addition, rest and drink fluids to replace electorlytes such as cocnut juice.

Coca-Cola Rolls Out New Misinformation Campaign

Coca-Cola Rolls Out New Misinformation Campaign | REAL World Wellness | Scoop.it
Coca-Cola, the leading beverage brand in the world, rolls out a new misinformation campaign to shift your attention to its low-calorie beverages.
Dr Veronica Anderson's insight:

Coke advcating flawed, outdated calorie-counting advice. All calories are not created equal. The metabolic effect of different sugars is what is at issue. Some sugars have a greater impact overall.

We now no that no-or low-cal beverages contribute to the obesitiy problem. There is a much higher likelihood of becoming obese on diet beverages than when drinking the full calorie beverages.

Note these obesity related MYTHS

1-Counting calories will help you lose weight (NO-All calories are not created equal)

2-Choosing diet food will help you lose weight (Substances such as Splendat and aspartame distort you biochemistry and actual lead to weight game)

3-Saturated fats are the enemy (actually most people need 50 percent of fats to be healthful saturated fats such as eggs, avocados, coconut oils, butter and grass feed beef)

4-Reducing your cholesterol to extermely low levels is recommended (Cholesterol is actually not the culprit in heart disease)
