In our cultures, we rarely focus on the importance on the relatonship between fathers and daughters. Perhaps it time we start paying much more attention to strenghtening the bond because it appears that having a solid functional relationship between father and daughter is perhaps the lifeblood of a girl becoming a healthy and well adjusted mother, lover and friend.

I like Christie. He gets the job done and is 'no nonsense'. I would vote for him. He has an issue that many in America have. I don't feel that his weight will affect how he governs, however, we do need to have a very fit VP behind him, just in case he succumbs to his size prematurely.

In sex, happiness hinges on keeping up with the Joneses, a new study finds. Sex apparently is like income: People are generally happy when they keep pace with the Joneses and they're even happier if they get a bit more.
Dr Veronica Anderson's insight:

Using national survey data and statistical analyses, Wadsworth found that people reported steadily higher levels of happiness as they reported steadily higher sexual frequency. But he also found that even after controlling for their own sexual frequency, people who believed they were having less sex than their peers were unhappier than those who believed they were having as much or more than their peers.

Exercise may protect against future emotional stress, study shows

Moderate exercise may help people cope with anxiety and stress for an extended period of time post-workout, according to a study by kinesiology researchers.
Dr Veronica Anderson's insight:

Smith found that exercise and quiet rest were equally effective at reducing anxiety levels initially. However, once they were emotionally stimulated (by being shown 90 photographs from the International Affective Picture System, a database of photographs used in emotion research) for ~20 minutes, the anxiety levels of those who had simply rested went back up to their initial levels, whereas those who had exercised maintained their reduced anxiety levels.

For those who have motivation to have exercise as part of their lifestyle here is your payoff. The lower resting heart rates of lifelong athletes gives you more years.

 

“If you have two healthy people,” said the lead author, Dr. Magnus Thorsten Jensen, a researcher at Copenhagen University Hospital Gentofte, “exactly the same in physical fitness, age, blood pressure and so on, the person with the highest resting heart rate is more likely to have a shorter life span.”

It seems that every day of my life is an endless discussion about narcotics in the emergency department.
Dr Veronica Anderson's insight:

I am in the group of worshippers of pleasure and enjoyment through healthful food and exercise. Nothing gives me a high like finishing a workout and eating whole natural food. Yes I love Gummy Bears and Twizzlers too as a once in a while extra.

I also enjoy being completely sharp and lucid. I enjoy the sensations of the world in real time.

The side effect of pain pills are so horrible for me. Dizziness, weakness, nausea, vomitting. I wonder how others can take these drugs and become addicted. EVeryone's body is different. Bodies like mine? I can't tell if the decrease in pain is worth the horrible way the drugs make me feel. 

I do realize that there are many people out there with problems physically and spiritually and American culture has created this time where we feel the answer is in a pill or alcoholic beverage. And as a WEstern-trained physican I take some of that responsibility in that WEstern medicine does a poor job of moving people off of the pill and onto another modality. AS flippantly as we prescribe the pills, we doctors rarely have a "Stopping the Pills" plan other than 'Your prescription ran out and you should be over this by now"

 

So yes, the pill worship is a big big problem a la Rush Limbaugh and Michael Jackson but perhaps the root of the problem lies with those of us who started prescribing without providing real assistance for people to get over their pains both phsycial and emotional.

A landmark study published today in JAMA Internal Medicine demonstrates that a patient-centered exercise intervention administered by trained physical therapists can slow the physical deterioration of Alzheimer’s Disease.

Was this intensive exercise intervention worthwhile? The answer is a resounding yes! The key results are as follows:

The exercise program slowed declines in physical function. Patients getting usual care declined an average of 14 points over 1 year on the functional independence measure. Patients getting home exercise declined 7 points and patients in the group exercise declined 10 points. (The difference between both exercise groups and usual care was statistically significant. The difference between the exercise groups was not significant) The exercise groups had far fewer falls. The group exercise subjects had 40% fewer falls, and the home exercise subjects fall rate was more than cut in half. This impact makes this study one of the most effective fall intervention programs ever devised Even when accounting for the cost of the intervention, the health costs in the exercise groups were not more expensive than the costs of usual care. The cost of this intensive intervention was compensated by lower rates of health service use in the exercise groups. This goes to show that the best things in life sometimes really are free.

New research shows that having an overweight body mass index (BMI) may help you live longer and healthier.

The research, which analyzed 97 studies in all, found that people with BMIs under 30 but above normal (the overweight range) had a 6 percent lower risk of dying from all causes than those who were normal weight, while those whose BMIs fell into the obese range were 18 percent more likely to die of any cause.

• Carb Cycling- healthy carbs, like whole wheat and quinoa, can help you feel full and be a great source of energy. However, if your body doesn’t use carbs as energy, the storage of carbs in the body can contribute to covering your abs behind a curtain of fat. Use carbs to your advantage through carb cycling. On days you plan to workout, increase your carb consumption. Your body will use the carbs as energy during exercise. On days you don’t workout, reduce your consumption of carbs. For example, on days that I workout, my lunch may include a sandwich consisting of two slices of whole wheat bread, turkey, spinach, peppers and other healthy toppings. On days I don’t workout, I make a sandwich by cutting one slice of bread in half and adding turkey and the toppings previously mentioned.

 

• Replace soda with water- soda is a major contributor to concealing your six-pack abs and widening the circumference of your abdominal/waist area. Fill up on water. Drink at least 64 ounces of water per day. Consume 16 ounces just before dinner. This will trick your body into feeling full to avoid overeating.

 

• Load up on vegetables and fruit- this will assist in filling you up without consuming excess calories.

 

• Eat slowly- to assist with satiety and reduce your risk of overeating, slow down the pace at which you consume meals.

Running the opposite direction of McDonalds would also serve the purpose of moving and staying well. I doubt after eating a Big Mac, fries and soda that one would have the proper energy to run anywhere.
