Ethical economy: Sloth and the Big Honest State - Breakingviews

Ethical economy: Sloth and the Big Honest State - Breakingviews | real utopias | Scoop.it
The basic BHS model has been adopted in all advanced economies and it is aspired to by most leaders in almost every developing country. Universal adoption is easy to explain: the BHS works well. It has delivered a reasonable mix of prosperity, protection and social support. It has proved remarkably sturdy. Since the Second World War, no BHS country has had collapsed into chaos, become impoverished or suffered fundamental social breakdown. The system is also popular with voters, even if many government-hating Americans hate to admit it.

David Graeber interviewed in Berlin on 30 May 2012, on the Occupy movement and social movements, with a focus on state and police repression measures and the use of undercover officers. He mentions the scandalous case of Mark Kennedy, as well as how big a threat social movements are to neoliberalism at this current historical moment. These are short random clips from the interview, which was conducted for an upcoming film about people spied upon by undercover police.

UK economy: no Plan B

UK economy: no Plan B | real utopias | Scoop.it
The latest IMF GDP forecasts confirm that the UK economy will be stagnant this year and in effect is virtually back in a ‘technical recession’ (see my post, Britain’s technical recession, 25 April 2012). Back in the spring, the IMF thought the UK would grow by 0.8% this year and by 2% in 2013, but the new forecast pencils in growth of just 0.2% this year and 1.4% in 2013. In its World Economic Outlook last September, the IMF was expecting the UK to grow by 1.1% in 2011. Now we know it grew by only 0.7% in 2011.

Organized labor is in free fall. The number of workers who belong to a union has plummeted about 20 percent over the last decade. Only 8 percent of all workers are unionized. And leading labor activists are wringing their hands over the seemingly inevitable death of a movement unable to cope with technological change.

Eco-Now: The Story of Change: Writing the Next Chapter | real utopias | Scoop.it
Newsflash: we're not going to shop our way to a greener planet. We're also not going to get a greener planet by taking a shorter shower or bringing our own bag to the grocery store. These things are a great place to start, says Annie Leonard, who has just produced her latest film The Story of Change, but they are a terrible place to stop.

System Failure: The Falling Rate of Profit and the Economic Crisis | real utopias | Scoop.it
Andrew Kliman is a professor of economics at Pace University and the author, most recently, of The Failure of Capitalist Production: Underlying Causes of the Great Recession. In discussion with Jonathan Maunder he argues that the economic crisis results from the fundamental logic of capitalism and cannot be solved by pro-growth reform measures. Only a more radical response is adequate to the task.

Let It Bleed: Libertarianism and the Workplace — Crooked Timber

These are just some of the considerations that lie at the heart of any defense of unions, regulation of contract and the workplace, and workplace democracy. Whether we call that defense egalitarian liberal, social democratic or democratic socialist, libertarians reject it as an abridgment of economic freedom and, more particularly, the freedom of owners to do what they wish with their property. But the defense of freedom requires such interventions. Private power, left as unrestricted as the Bleeding Hearts would leave it, simply gives too much scope to private empires of tyranny and domination. Taking freedom seriously means confronting the unfreedoms that ordinary people are subject to in their ordinary lives: the Bleeding Hearts, with their fetish of private property and contract, just can’t do that.

Missing Occupy | occupy illuminati

Missing Occupy | occupy illuminati | real utopias | Scoop.it
Whatever happened to Occupy? The movement that rocked the U.S. in the fall of 2011 has faded to background noise. A recent “National Gathering” drew 500 participants, not an impressive number considering how many were roused to action all over the country just months earlier. The “general assembly,” the much-celebrated participatory democratic institution that was the movement’s trademark, seems to have fallen into disuse almost everywhere. And there is no alternative decision-making body emerging to take its place.

Anarchists and the Occupy Movement | Anarchist news dot org

Anarchists and the Occupy Movement | Anarchist news dot org | real utopias | Scoop.it
While it has been widely written and discussed that Occupy Wall Street and the broader Occupy movement are at their core, fundamentally anarchist projects, very little has been written from the inside about the experiences of activists and organizers working under the Occupy banner who identify as such. While Occupy tends to operate on core anarchist structures and principles, and many of the initial organizers of OWS were indeed self-identified anarchists, the movement is losing its most experienced and radical elements at a rapid pace and many Occupy encampments and assemblies never had an experienced anarchist core to begin with.
