KURT VONNEGUT wrote that: “In every big transaction, there is a magic moment during which a man has surrendered a treasure, and during which the man who is due to receive it has not yet done so. An alert lawyer will make the moment his own, possessing the treasure for a magic microsecond, taking a little of it, passing it on.” Like so many novelists, he was talking bosh. No alert lawyer takes only “a little”.

First Trailer For Sci Fi Consumerism Thriller “Branded” Released ... | real utopias | Scoop.it
With 97 unique QR codes embedded in the movie trailer, this might be the most interactive trailer that we’ve ever seen! It makes sense, given that the movie is basically a sci fi thriller about how we’ve all become slaves to marketing… and the dark power behind it all! So far, the film looks like a super creepy, LSD trip about consumerism.

SYRIZA Party in Greek Debt Crisis Shows How Occupy Wall Street ... | real utopias | Scoop.it
For the past several weeks election polls have demonstrated that Greece’s left-wing coalition, the anti-bailout SYRIZA party, is likely to win the general elections in June. Previously a relatively insignificant coalition that gained between 4%-5% in general elections, SYRIZA is now expected to win between 21%-28%, gaining exponential importance in Greece’s political playing field and increasing the likelihood that it will become the country’s next governing coalition. Politicians around Europe have been speculating over the effects a SYRIZA victory will have on Greece’s willingness to renegotiate the terms of debt repayment and bailout.

Leading Companies Contradict Own Actions on Climate Science | real utopias | Scoop.it
Many of the country’s leading companies have taken contradictory actions when it comes to climate change science while pumping a tremendous amount of resources into influencing the discussion, according to an analysis released today by the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS).

Most climate talk of big business is just that. Just talk, little walk. Short-termism caused by their being hostage to Wall Street capitalism.

Asymmetrical confederalism and the P2P mode of production

Asymmetrical confederalism and the P2P mode of production | real utopias | Scoop.it

The framework of the transition towards a P2P mode of production, however, requires a review of its bases. The progressive reduction of the optimal scale of production, which is the origin of the crisis, but also of the viability of the p2p alternatives, generates an inevitable conceptual tension between the universal nature of the commons and the local character of a growing part of production physical and distribution.

The season of revolution « The Immanent Frame | real utopias | Scoop.it

"Whatever name we assign to the events in the Arab world, we end up trapping ourselves in one limiting or problematic framework or another. The concept of seasons is embedded in a long history of Orientalizing the region, as if what happened in the history of Arab people before 2011 did not qualify for an acknowledgment of the energies, struggles, and fighting for a better life they have been waging against western colonialism, intrusions, and unjust local governments for over 100 years."

Why China may not be 'capitalist': the Role of the State in Chinese Economic Development

Why China may not be 'capitalist': the Role of the State in Chinese Economic Development | real utopias | Scoop.it

“A transitional economy is the economy which is established after capitalism and landlordism is abolished, and before there is a real socialist economy. It is common that one’s view of a transitional economy is coloured by how things were in the Soviet Union, Eastern Europe and China. It is easy to draw the conclusion that a well functioning transitional economy equals how things were run then, minus the dictatorship, plus workers’ control and management. In fact, things are more complex than that. In Stalinist states the economy is deformed, compared to the socialist model economy, in a much broader sense than that the plan was decided upon and implemented bureaucratically."

NYPD Unconcerned With Actually Convicting Occupy Wall Street Protesters | real utopias | Scoop.it
As hundreds of protesters arrested during months of Occupy Wall Street demonstrations get their day in court, their arresting officers aren't even bothering to show up. When they have, as in the first two cases to go to trial, the NYPD testimony was disproved with photographic and video evidence, resulting in both protesters getting acquitted. Many of the others charged, most often with disorderly conduct (a violation, not a crime), will have to wait until at least September to go before a judge because the prosecution doesn't have their police witnesses ready. As with contesting a traffic ticket, it's often difficult to get cops to court, but when it comes to protesters, there's probably more to it than busy schedules.

1. Cover many important issues in one spot - With so many different problems facing our species at the same time, getting involved in activism can seem like fighting an octopus with infinite tentacles, or more appropriately an “infinipus” as Madison Rupert described on end the lie radio this Sunday while discussing the global aristocracy with Bob Tuskin, Curt Williams and myself. At the Bilderberg meeting you can find all of those tentacles (or at least most of them) in one place.

The Failure of Occupy Wall Street - Huffington Post | real utopias | Scoop.it
For those who are objective and unemotional it was easy to see this coming. The Occupy "movement" (and I use that term generously) has spiraled into irrelevance and relative obscurity. And it's a shame, as much of its message had broad resonance which could've been harnessed into significant power and influence in Washington. Instead, it became a whole lotta nuthin' over nuthin.'
