DO YOU STILL BELIEVE IN THE "AMERICAN DREAM"? The "Frog Revolution", Mounting Social Inequality and the "Super Rich" | real utopias | Scoop.it

"What is at risk without effective rebellion is much more than dollars. Harold Meyerson got it right: “If belief and participation in democracy are sustained by people’s conviction that democracy produces good economic outcomes, then the growing concentration of wealth and income in the United States is a long-term threat to everything we profess to stand for.”

Steve Keen and the Labor Theory of Value

Steve Keen and the Labor Theory of Value | real utopias | Scoop.it

With his persistent snipping from the Post-Keynesian left, Steve Keen has managed to get under the skin of Paul Krugman, the prominent Nobel laureate economics professor at Princeton and New York Times op-ed resident columnist at the public forefront of the demand for macro policies centered on fighting global unemployment. This has granted Keen a measure of public attention to his Minskyan version of monetary economics. Publicity-wise, this may not be the worst time to snipe at Keen from the extreme left.

From Neo-Liberalism to Economic Democracy: An Alternative Road for Europe — Social Europe Journal

From Neo-Liberalism to Economic Democracy: An Alternative Road for Europe — Social Europe Journal | real utopias | Scoop.it

In February 2009, the European Parliament adopted a resolution on social economy which among other things called for “experimentation with new economic and social models” and declared that the social economy is “important, both symbolically and in terms of performance, for the purpose of strengthening industrial and economic democracy”. We see here a clear statement of support for alternative models, and specifically for economic democracy. The resolution was passed by an 89% majority, indicating that the concept of economic democracy can win broad support in Europe. Three years have gone by – a serious effort should now be made to turn this idea into reality.

We need to focus on growth and being greener – not ‘green growth’ | British Politics and Policy at LSE

We need to focus on growth and being greener – not ‘green growth’ | British Politics and Policy at LSE | real utopias | Scoop.it

Subsidies to select renewable industrial sectors are paid for by the rest of the economy, in particular through increased energy prices. Simon Less argues that the government’s industrial policies will be costly and hamper growth; resources are being squandered that could have been used to deliver both more growth and greater emissions reduction.

Judging by the content of the debate in Greece over the past few days, one might think that the most pressing issue facing the country ahead of the upcoming general elections is illegal immigration rather than the economy. The two coalition partners, New Democracy and PASOK, have attempted to outdo each other by trying to appear determined to tackle a matter that is gaining relevance as a result of the crisis.

Elections in France and the United States: The Same and So Very Different - Middle East Online

In 2012, two very important and highly contested presidential elections are taking place in France (April 22) and the United States (November 6). Virtually the same issues are being debated in each country, and almost in the same manner. And in both countries, the president is the most powerful political figure. But there is one very great difference between the two: not ideology but the rules of the election. Different rules breed strikingly different electoral tactics.

Occupy, Unions Plan 4/4 Day Of Action For Public Transportation, Blame Banks ... - Huffington Post | real utopias | Scoop.it

Last week's "fare strike" on the New York City subway won't be the last time Occupy turns its attention to mass transit. On Wednesday, activists in at least 18 cities are teaming up with the nation's largest transit union for a national day of action. The day is part of a concerted effort to place the blame for rising fares and diminishing service on the same banks that got the country into the recession -- and it comes just as Congress is haltingly trying to pass a major transportation bill.

Income Inequality Is Killing the Economy, Obama Says—Is He Wrong? - The Atlantic

Income Inequality Is Killing the Economy, Obama Says—Is He Wrong? - The Atlantic | real utopias | Scoop.it

If this theory is correct, then it's the very nature of the global economy that could be exacerbating income inequality and slowing overall U.S. growth. In the 1950s and 1960s, the U.S. enjoyed dominance in global trade and average incomes kept pace with productivity. But as the rest of the world caught up, the U.S. has off-shored much of our industrial capacity and found that technology could replace some middle-income jobs at the same time that our overall growth has moderated. That's an important subject for the president to address in a speech. But addressing it with public policy? That's much easier said than done.
