The Conflation Trap

The Conflation Trap | real utopias | Scoop.it

With regard to the latter issue, left-libertarians regard the current domination of the economic landscape by large hierarchical firms as the product not of free competition but of government intervention – including not only direct subsidies, grants of monopoly privilege, and barriers to entry, but also a regulatory framework that enables firms to socialise the scale costs associated with growth and the informational costs associated with hierarchy, while pocketing the benefits – and leaving employees and consumers with a straitened range of options. In the absence of government intervention, we maintain, firms could be expected to be smaller, flatter, and more numerous, with greater worker empowerment.

The Crisis of Value in a Collaborative Economy

The Crisis of Value in a Collaborative Economy | real utopias | Scoop.it
jean lievens's insight:

This isn’t really an anti-capitalist phenomenon. It’s more a process of capitalism’s evolution. It’s the consequence of collaborative forces coming into play in an economy that is no longer preoccupied with living hand to mouth.

Who Will Feed Us? | ETC Group

Who Will Feed Us? | ETC Group | real utopias | Scoop.it
By 2050, or much sooner, we will be growing food under climatic conditions we’ve never seen before and learning that “normal” weather is an illusive fiction.  Yet, we are told that global land grabs and plantations of agrofuels are a “win-win.” The truth is that policymakers don’t know enough about our food supply. We don’t know where our food comes from and we don’t know who is feeding the hungry today. We have absolutely no idea who will feed us in 2050.  This report raises more questions than answers. It begins with a comparison of the likelihood of the industrial food chain and the peasant food web getting us through climate chaos.

Building Critical Mass for a Progressive Future - OpEdNews

Building Critical Mass for a Progressive Future - OpEdNews | real utopias | Scoop.it
A number of things are necessary in a serious agenda for progressive change when the paradigm we're up against will vigorously oppose every agenda item we come up with. Cummins points out two of these requirements, which I cover at length in my book. The first is a "Global Declaration of Interdependence." For the second, Cummins says we must "overthrow the Corporatocracy and dismantle the suicide economy." But again to be accurate and ensure we're not just slapping band-aids on symptoms, we must stop and replace not just the Kleptocracy but the Industrial Growth Society which depends on economic cannibalism.

ATHENS—In olive green fatigues, with sleeves rolled up to reveal thick forearms, Costas Vaxevanis resembles an army drill sergeant. As he leans forward to examine the latest issue of Hot Doc, the magazine he edits from a cramped office in a half-empty suburban shopping mall, he looks as if he is preparing for battle. And Vaxevanis, 46, is fighting a war of sorts.

Slavoj Žižek: The west's crisis is one of democracy as much as ...

In one of the last interviews before his fall, Nicolae Ceausescu was asked by a western journalist how he justified the fact that Romanian citizens could not travel freely abroad although freedom of movement was guaranteed by the constitution. His answer was in the best tradition of Stalinist sophistry: true, the constitution guarantees freedom of movement, but it also guarantees the right to a safe, prosperous home. So we have here a potential conflict of rights: if Romanian citizens were to be allowed to leave the country, the prosperity of their homeland would be threatened. In this conflict, one has to make a choice, and the right to a prosperous, safe homeland enjoys clear priority …

The declarations in Catalonia about their right for an independent state are simply a flare to avoid the actual fact: high level corruption in the current local government and the privatization of health and educational systems.

In order to ensure that our economic and environmental policies harmonize with the life-as-lived interests of ordinary human beings, at the human scale, a grassroots movement of citizens has begun working to steer the US Congress away from corporate backers and toward people-centered solutions. The American economy’s dependence on fossil fuels carries an incredible burden of hidden costs, and the American people are increasingly aware that clean energy will make the nation more prosperous, more environmentally stable and more democratic.

Occupy 2.0: The Great Turning

Occupy 2.0: The Great Turning | real utopias | Scoop.it

After a roaring start, the Occupy movement hit a wall in the form of rough-handling and evictions by the police. Occupiers could have given up on nonviolence—as a small faction will always try to get us to do—or just given up; but instead we have gone back to the drawing board, while continuing to occupy select spaces, this time with advance training. This is exactly the right response. As my former Berkeley colleague Todd Gitlin writesin The Nation, “To take on a warped state of affairs that has been decades in the making will take decades,” and for this purpose the encampment culture is “both necessary and inadequate.”
