A profile of me and my work appeared in the N.Y. Times yesterday. There were two story angles: how I conduct my research and allegations of questionable financial dealings in which I was involved. I wrote a formal statement to the Columbia University student paper and online blog, but you are also my community, so let me address you directly.

“The number of Americans who view socialism positively is nearly double the number who view Fox.” | real utopias | Scoop.it
Gallup published a poll at the end of November 2012 highlighting how Americans view different terms and ideologies. Socialism was one of the least popular terms but still significantly more popular than ratings of our present Congress which hover around 10% and as it turns out – more people regard socialism positively than the number of people who watch Fox News. Ordinarily – I’m not sure that’s a tremendous boon because it is almost comparing apples and oranges, but in this case – Fox News is really the only “conservative” channel where you can turn on the TV and live comfortably in an alternate reality.

You Can't Fight Climate Change Without Rethinking The Economy ... | real utopias | Scoop.it

This isn't a return to the dark ages though. And it is not a rejection of the power of business. From James Murray's call for a New Environmentalism to Alex Steffen's vision of zero carbon cities, many claim there is plenty of money to be made in our descent to a fossil fuel free future. But most sensible voices in this debate recognize that alongside reimagining our cities, our building codes, our energy systems and our transportation networks —we must also learn to think about the economy and economics a little differently.

The Future of Shopping - Newsweek

The Future of Shopping - Newsweek | real utopias | Scoop.it

“Clearly unsatisfactory” is what Best Buy CEO Hubert Joly called the company’s third-quarter earnings. It’s a droll bit of understatement—so French!—when words like “plunge” and “dismal” more accurately capture the numbers that the company reported on Nov. 20. Sales were $12.1 billion in the third quarter of 2011; a year later, that number had shrunk to $10.7 billion, with net income working out to just 3 cents a share. Five years ago, in December 2007, a share of Best Buy was worth more than $50; today the company is trading just under $13. This may be some sort of record—from profit powerhouse to basket case in under five years.

Individualism and the Failures of Liberalism in America - Center for Research on Globalization

Individualism and the Failures of Liberalism in America - Center for Research on Globalization | real utopias | Scoop.it

There is a common question being asked today in liberal and activist circles: “Why, in the face of all the deeply immoral actions engaged in by the U.S. government regarding its domestic and foreign actions, can liberals not organize themselves enough to push back against the economic-political managers of the totalitarian surge of the U.S. government?” This essay is an attempt to answer this question, at least in part.

Urging Economists to Step Away From the Blackboard - Businessweek

Urging Economists to Step Away From the Blackboard - Businessweek | real utopias | Scoop.it

Ronald Coase published his career-making paper, “The Nature of the Firm,” 75 years ago. He won the Nobel prize for economics in 1991. In a lecture in 2002, he argued that physics has moved beyond the assumptions of Isaac Newton, and biology beyond Darwin. (Not that he knew them.) But economics, he said, had failed to advance past the efficient-market assumptions of Adam Smith. This year Coase, a professor emeritus at the University of Chicago Law School, is attempting to start a new academic journal ambitiously titled Man and the Economy. The premise: Economics is broken. Coase’s journal is still just a plan, but his frustration with orthodox economics has energized his followers.

Democracy in network is first and foremost a mindset, by @bernardosampa

Democracy in network is first and foremost a mindset, by @bernardosampa | real utopias | Scoop.it
“The political structures must change. But the replacement will emerge as people act and communicate in the present, not talking about the future.” The phrase is from the book Open Source Democracy, from Douglas Rushkoff, published in 2003. The global crisis has not only confirmed some Rushkoff intuitions or diagnoses on the expires of representative democracy. However, policy alternatives are less clear. Some speak of the mechanisms of direct democracy (popular initiatives, referendums…). Others insist on the path of participatory democracy. Liquid Democracy, based on delegates, not representatives, applied internally by the German Pirate Party, also getting higher. However, there is another concept that is gaining strength among groups, networks and thinkers: networked democracy.

And to what extent do they operate in unison for their own private gains over benefits for the 99 percent? We examine a sample of the 1 percent: the extractor sector, whose companies are on the ground extracting material from the global commons, and using low-cost labor to amass wealth. These companies include oil, gas, and various mineral extraction organizations, whereby the value of the material removed far exceeds the actual cost of removal. We also examine the investment sector of the global 1 percent: companies whose primary activity is the amassing and reinvesting of capital. This sector includes global central banks, major investment money management firms, and other companies whose primary efforts are the concentration and expansion of money, such as insurance companies.
