The American Dream Vs. the European Dream by Jeremy Rifkin - The Globalist

The American Dream Vs. the European Dream by Jeremy Rifkin - The Globalist | real utopias | Scoop.it

As Jeremy Rifkin sees it, the American and European dreams are — at their core — about two diametrically opposed ideas of freedom and security. While Americans have long valued autonomy as a component of freedom, Europeans find this same freedom within communities. While both dreams have their merit, Rifkin sees the European Dream as better serving the future of humanity.

It may seem that this is simply a “political” or an “economic” matter, but ultimately, the matters at hand are spiritual ones. We need to ponder what our true “gods” are and where our commitments truly are.

Economist Richard Wolff joins Bill Moyers to explore capitalism | real utopias | Scoop.it

Richard Wolff’s smart, blunt talk about the crisis of capitalism on hisfirst Moyers & Company appearance was so compelling and provocative, we asked him to return. This time, the economics expert answers questions sent in by our viewers, diving further into economic inequality, the limitations of industry regulation, and the widening gap between a booming stock market and a population that increasingly lives in poverty.

Why Noam Chomsky Is the Subject of Relentless Attacks by Corporate Media and Establishment 'Intellectuals' | real utopias | Scoop.it

One very common tactic for enforcing political orthodoxies is to malign the character, "style" and even mental health of those who challenge them. The most extreme version of this was an old Soviet favorite: to declare political dissidents mentally ill and put them in hospitals. In the US, those who take even the tiniest steps outside of political convention are instantly decreed "crazy", as  happened to the 2002 anti-war version of Howard Dean and the current iteration of Ron Paul (in most cases,  what is actually "crazy" are the political orthodoxiesthis tactic seeks to shield from challenge).

Noam Chomsky: 'No individual changes anything alone'

Noam Chomsky: 'No individual changes anything alone' | real utopias | Scoop.it

It may have been pouring with rain, water overrunning the gutters and spreading fast and deep across London's Euston Road, but this did not stop a queue forming, and growing until it snaked almost all the way back to Euston station. Inside Friends House, a Quaker-run meeting hall, the excitement was palpable. People searched for friends and seats with thinly disguised anxiety; all watched the stage until, about 15 minutes late, a short, slightly top-heavy old man climbed carefully on to the stage and sat down. The hall filled with cheers and clapping, with whoops and with whistles.

Currency Solutions for a Wiser World

Currency Solutions for a Wiser World | real utopias | Scoop.it

Rethinking Money points out that there is a way, in fact a thousand ways, to stop our current juggernaut towards global self-destruction. There is a system of solutions already in place in localities throughout the world where terrible problems have existed. The changes came about, not through the redistribution of wealth, increased conventional taxation, bond measures or enlightened self-interest from corporate entities, but rather, by people simply rethinking the concept of money. With that restructuring, everything changed.

The Economic Realms: Counter-Economics

The first presentation of the theory of counter-economics was made by Samuel Edward Konkin III at a conference organized by J. Neil Schulman in 1974 held in Cheshire, Massachusetts.[citation needed] The first book to portray counter-economics as a strategy for achieving a libertarian society was Schulman's novel Alongside Night (1979).

The Russian blogosphere is sharply divided over the death of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, with some people expressing vulgar joy at his passing, and others pouring out passionate eulogies. Many people repeated cliches that Chavez was a "dictator" and had no interest in learning anything more about him or his social programs. Such comments contain more ignorance and prejudice than anger.

While a few pundits have the decency to obliquely mention a few of the achievements of the Chávez government, others have absolutely no shame. Human Rights Watch, for instance, self-appointed defender of all that is right and good, has truly outdone itself—publishing a denunciation of Chávez that, paying no attention to context, ignores all signals that point to social progress and speeds right past good taste.

A serious game about sweatshops … you won't find it in Apple's App Store - The Guardian | real utopias | Scoop.it

On 9 November, 1982, US surgeon general Dr Everett Koop gave a speech at the Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic in Pittsburgh, in which he challenged America to confront the causes of domestic violence and child abuse. After the speech, he took a question from an audience member asking whether he thought video games had a negative effect on young people. Yes, he replied. Teenagers were becoming addicted "body and soul" to video games, a form of entertainment in which "everything is 'zap the enemy', there's nothing constructive".

For Millennials, Reforming Government Means Reimagining Democracy | Roosevelt Institute

There is a paradox in the Millennial generation’s relationship with government. On the one hand, research shows that we firmly believe government can and should play a role in solving society’s most urgent and complex problems. We’re less interested in big government vs. small government than we are in better government -- making our democratic systems more inclusive and more responsive. On the other hand, despite seeing government as a theoretically important tool, this generation is opting out. We don’t see ourselves reflected in the decision-making process in our governments, in the values undergirding policies, or in the issues being debated by our representatives.
