Chomsky's Occupy: From Radical Agenda to Radical Practice ...

Noam Chomsky has seen a lot of social movements. He cut his teeth on the civil rights and anti-war movements of the 1960s and 1970s. He participated in the anti-intervention struggles of the 1980s as well as in the World Social Forums that began in the 1990s. Now in his 80s, Chomsky has hardly slowed down with his schedule of writing and speaking and agitating. And he is certainly not one to watch the new Occupy movement from the sidelines.

Rebel Cities: From the Right to the City to the Urban Revolution by David ... - The Guardian | real utopias | Scoop.it

The increasing urbanisation of the globe is frequently discussed and worried over. This is ironic, as there has seldom been a period less preoccupied with how to create the city as a positive, active, collective polis rather than an atomised, accidental antheap. Libertarian bores uncritically hail sprawl, the megaslum or the megacity depending on the occasion, and an environmentalist left seems terrified of the city and all it implies. Kent-born, Baltimore-based geographer David Harvey has long been an exception to both. Rebel Cities collects recent articles for journals such as New Left Review and Socialist Register with recent broadsides on urban protest, and has the slightly valedictory tone of an idea whose time has come.

Stranger in a Strange Land: #GrowOccupy – Why Occupy Will Never ... | real utopias | Scoop.it

There has been a great deal of talk in the Occupy movement around the fear of co-optation. The latest round of debate has been around the 99% Spring movement. Adbusters has sounded the alarm with the cry “#DefendOccupy.” The basic premise of the current debate is whether MoveOn.org is a bogeyman that is stealing the ideas of Occupy for its own ends, which some claim are as a “front group” for the democratic party.

Occupy Papua New Guinea Takes On Government, Wins | real utopias | Scoop.it

In another example of the power of popular resistance, Papua New Guineans this week appear to have successfully stopped the government from delaying elections and implementing a controversial Judicial Conduct Law that would allow the legislature to remove judges. In front of a massive crowd organized by labor unions, churches, social media groups, and civil society organizations, PNG Prime Minister Peter O'Neill promised to hold elections on time.

Worker-Based Investment Funds - P2P Foundation | real utopias | Scoop.it

'Worker ownership can also take a multi-company form like the Quebec Solidarity Fund, a labor-sponsored pension fund that holds equity in small and medium-sized companies across the province, or the Meidner Plan proposed in Sweden in the 1970s where worker ownership in whole sectors is built up over time through annual allocation of shares to wage-earner funds. These two, along with the Coopfond in Italy (which funds development of the coop sector), are at the same time examples of meso-level worker-based investment funds.

There has likely not been a sociopolitical phenomenon more heavily documented than the Occupy Wall Street (OWS) movement. It’ll cost you

It’ll cost you | real utopias | Scoop.it

IN 1698 the nobles and landowners of the Kingdom of Scotland tried to elevate their country to a world trading nation by colonising the isthmus of Panama. The Darien scheme failed and nearly bankrupted the country. Within a decade Scotland had signed an Act of Union with England to create the United Kingdom of Great Britain. Scots found it tough in the 18th century to be a small nation in a globalising world. But nationalists are an optimistic bunch, and they would dearly like to have another go.

Our responsibility toward the revolution | Egypt Independent

Our responsibility toward the revolution | Egypt Independent | real utopias | Scoop.it

Many Egyptians now stand unsure of what to do next, while more are frustrated by the outcome of the revolution — a regime that is still in place, a movement that hijacked power leaving those who sparked the revolution empty-handed, a turbulent transition period — it all seems to most people like a catastrophic outcome to a very hopeful revolution. I, on the other hand, believe it is the best course for the revolution, if we as revolutionaries become aware of our reality and take advantage of the recent turn of events.

Occupy Returns to Roots With 'Sleepful Protests' - The Nation. (blog) | real utopias | Scoop.it

When covering what was called the “first real occupation” of 2012 in San Francisco last week, I posed the question: could Occupy Wall Street still be Occupy Wall Street without ongoing occupations?
