The Contradictions of “Real Socialism” by Michael A. Lebowitz :: Monthly Review Press

The Contradictions of “Real Socialism” by Michael A. Lebowitz :: Monthly Review Press | real utopias | Scoop.it

What was “real socialism”—the term which originated in twentieth-century socialist societies for the purpose of distinguishing them from abstract, theoretical socialism? In this volume, Michael A. Lebowitz considers the nature, tendencies, and contradictions of those societies. Beginning with the constant presence of shortages within “real socialism,” Lebowitz searches for the inner relations which generate these patterns. He finds these, in particular, in what he calls “vanguard relations of production,” a relation which takes the apparent form of a social contract where workers obtain benefits not available to their counterparts in capitalism but lack the power to decide within the workplace and society.

In 2009, Ford brought its new supermini, the Fiesta, over from Europe in a brave attempt to attract the attention of young Americans. It passed out 100 of the cars to influential bloggers for a free six-month test-drive, with just one condition: document your experience online, whether you love the Fiesta or hate it.

Eurozone crisis: Time to tax the rich? | vox | real utopias | Scoop.it

Neither Germany’s chancellor Angela Merkel nor the Social Democrat opposition leaders are likely to agree to further bailouts for the countries in crisis. They fear a storm of popular outrage using national tax funds for European 'debt collectivisation' (Birchler and Bütler 2012). The governments of other solvent countries such as the Netherlands, Austria, and Finland are under similar pressures. This is also why Germany and company oppose further bailouts by the ECB.

Thrive is the name of a controversial film that asks, and attempts to answer, some of the deepest questions about the nature of the human condition and what is thwarting our chances to prosper. Lavishly funded, it features appealing imagery, beautiful music, and interviews with many leading progressives, including myself. Yet ten of us have signed a statement formally disassociating ourselves from the film.

The cyber expanse revolution - IsraelDefense | real utopias | Scoop.it
Israel’s attitude towards the Palestinian leadership, whether if Hamas or Fatah, is not observation that does not indicate or lead to an understanding of the situation. It is only by focusing on understanding the moods among the Palestinian youths that insights regarding the future can be produced. In other words, determining Israel's strategy towards the Palestinians does not depend on the saying of one Palestinian leader or another. The new era has created a new leader – the crowd; the wide public is becoming a dominant player, primarily the young populace.

Some great pieces are up at The Atlantic about how the young generation appears uninterested in “owning” (ha ha ha, entering into multi-year debt agreements) the main drivers of the economy: cars and houses. Compounding this shift in desires is the new spate of technologies that will enable options other than “ownership.”

Why Social Democrats should embrace a Democratic Mixed Economy — Social Europe Journal

Why Social Democrats should embrace a Democratic Mixed Economy — Social Europe Journal | real utopias | Scoop.it

Current debates within the European socialist movement on the way forward for the Centre-Left, often seem to be centred on the unnecessarily narrow field of “state versus market”. Much of the debate revolves around questions of the “correct ratio” of state-to-market in the provision of public goods and services, with scant attention given to the political nature of either. Where an economic vision is articulated we see labels such as “decent capitalism” or the highly traditional “social-market economy” employed. Both of these terms however, borrow heavily from a terminology, and therefore a mind-set, which is not of the Left and which unnecessarily limits and restricts the thinking of social-democratic strategists and activists.

Review of “Occupy Nation: The Roots, The Spirit, and the Promise of Occupy Wall Street” by Todd Gitlin - The Boston Globe | real utopias | Scoop.it

In New York’s Zuccotti Park on Sept. 17, 2011, a group of activists triggered the Occupy Wall Street movement, seizing along with the park in lower Manhattan a growing national spotlight around issues of economic inequality. Columbia University professor Todd Gitlin, author of “The Sixties: Years of Hope, Days of Rage,” knows firsthand about political movements, having been president of Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) in the early 1960s, helping organize some of the first demonstrations against the US war in Vietnam. Gitlin’s insightful, eye-opening, and quite sympathetic account of the Occupy movement begins with its intellectual roots, then moves to its organizational structure, and finally describes the evolution of its tactics after September 2011 and beyond.

Unleash the Mind - Christians for a Sustainable Economy | real utopias | Scoop.it
America’s wealth is not an inventory of goods; it is an organic entity, a fragile pulsing fabric of ideas, expectations, loyalties, moral commitments, visions. To vivisect it for redistribution is to kill it. As President Mitterrand’s French technocrats discovered in the 1980s, and President Obama’s quixotic ecocrats are discovering today, government managers of complex systems of wealth soon find they are administering an industrial corpse, a socialized Solyndra.

Marxist update: 'The Future of History'

Marxist update: 'The Future of History' | real utopias | Scoop.it
Whatever the (well deserved) derision heaped on the head of Francis Fukuyama for his 'end of history' thesis, he has the merit of posing the big questions. In his 'The Future of History' article (Foreign Affairs, Jan-Feb) he poses two big questions that are vital for Marxists: Is the neoliberal undermining of the social position of the employed working class and poorer sections of the middle class compatible with liberal democracy? and What explains what he calls the 'absent left' – the lack in theory or practice of a powerful left/populist alternative to neoliberalism in a period of such drastic economic collapse and moral bankruptcy of the dominant neoliberal model?
