MAYDAY! MAYDAY! They can't save the economy, so the gargoyles are going to save themselves | real utopias | Scoop.it

In the eurozone particularly, loose lending policies and economic under-performance have led to dangerously high Sovereign borrowings, particularly among the so-called ClubMed States. Thus not only bank bailouts but Sovereign bailouts have become necessary…in the absence of any willingness by the banks to write off loans they should never have made in the first place.

To Reclaim Our Future, We Must Change the Present. Our Proposal for Changing the System and not the Climate

To Reclaim Our Future, We Must Change the Present. Our Proposal for Changing the System and not the Climate | real utopias | Scoop.it

System change requires an end to the global empire of transnational corporations and banks. Only a society that has the type of democratic control over resources which is based on workers (including migrant workers), indigenous and women’s rights and respects the sovereignty of the people will be able to guarantee economic, social and environmental justice.  System Change requires a break from the patriarchal society in order to guarantee women’s rights in all aspects of life. Feminism and ecology are key components of the new society that we are fighting for.

More confusions on the recovery

More confusions on the recovery | real utopias | Scoop.it

Dean Baker is one of the few economists who predicted a financial collapse in the US that would arise from the excessive credit and property boom that got under way from 2002 onwards (http://deanbaker.net/).  He is now in great demand by the labour movement to speak on their behalf against austerity and neoliberal policies.  So it is always worth considering his arguments on the Great Recession and the subsequent weak economic recovery.

Lean Socialist

Lean Socialist | real utopias | Scoop.it
Why liberalism needs socialism--and vice versa.
jean lievens's insight:

The only way back to political relevance for socialists lies through realistic engagement with politics as it exists today. And that involves messiness and compromise—reaching out to liberals as friends and allies—while not losing sight of the need to decisively transform a political framework built on a self-destructive and morally intolerable mode of production.

When Your Boss Steals Your Wages: The Invisible Epidemic That's Sweeping ... - The Real News Network

When Your Boss Steals Your Wages: The Invisible Epidemic That's Sweeping ... - The Real News Network | real utopias | Scoop.it

Imagine you’ve just landed a job with a big-time retailer. Your task is to load and unload boxes from trucks and containers. It’s back-breaking work. You toil 12 to 16 hours a day, often without a lunch break. Sweat drenches your clothes in the 90-degree heat, but you keep going: your kids need their dinner. One day, your supervisor tells you that instead of being paid an hourly wage, you will now get paid for the number of containers you load or unload. This will be great for you, your supervisor says: More money!  But you open your next paycheck to find it shrunken to the point that you are no longer even making minimum wage. You complain to your supervisor, who promptly sends you home without pay for the day. If you pipe up again, you’ll be looking for another job.

Now in its second year of existence and approaching the second "May Day" celebration in which it has participated, Occupy Wall Street has both toned down and ramped up its rhetoric and goals. Organisers of the Occupy Central movement said they had been seeking support from women and workers but acknowledged it had not been easy.

In recent days the campaign for universal suffrage came under criticism after 10 more professionals stepped forth to back Occupy Central. As Occupy Wall Street Prepares For May Day Milestone, Movement Looks For ... - Huffington Post | real utopias | Scoop.it

On Friday, members of the loose coalition of progressive activists known as Occupy Wall Street met inside the sprawling atrium of Deutsche Bank’s New York headquarters to plan for a day of street protest on Wednesday, May 1. A year earlier, a similar planning session held at the same space saw hundreds of attendees pack the black-and-white marble floors of the massive arcade, creating a lively mood with impromptu speeches, drum circles and a potluck table providing free food to activists.

Solidarity with the Syrian revolution - Socialist Worker Online | real utopias | Scoop.it

A group of Syrian, Arab and international activists launched the Global Campaign of Solidarity with the Syrian Revolution at the World Social Forum in Tunis last month to create an open and diverse platform to support the Syrian revolution. The World Social Forum was an opportunity to create organic relationships with progressive intellectuals and social movements. In addition, it was an important moment to re-inscribe the Syrian revolution in a larger framework of popular struggles against oppression and authoritarianism. It was an occasion to reassert the Syrian people's right to self-defense and resistance against despotism and dictatorship.

The Myth of the Free Market: You'll Find a Unicorn Before You Find a Free Market

The Myth of the Free Market: You'll Find a Unicorn Before You Find a Free Market | real utopias | Scoop.it

Capitalism is meant to pivot around the free market.  The theory goes that if only the market were rid of government meddling (regulation) then true competition would reign, with corporations battling it out to provide their goods and services to rational, all knowing consumers.  This, according to supporters, would provide stable and accurate prices and quality for goods and services as competition would aggregate supply, demand and pricing.  Corporations who provided a good or service which was not wanted, was above the market price or below the market quality demanded by the rational consumer in this open, free market would simply fail and those who met demand would win.  Therefore the success or failure of a company would be directly proportional to its ability to meet the needs of its consumer.

Occupy Love: Film Explores The Heart of Occupy Movement

Occupy Love: Film Explores The Heart of Occupy Movement | real utopias | Scoop.it

The United States screening tour and global online launch of Velcrow Rippers' most recent film,Occupy Love film starts May 3rd. Though the peaceful occupation at Zucotti Park has ended, TheOccupy Love film documents how the seeds of The Occupy Movement have sprouted and converged into a Global Super Movement. Social movements like Strike Debt, Occupy Sandy, Transition Towns,Idle No More, Forward on Climate, and One Billion Rising all share common roots and desires. They all call for grassroots, creative, non-violent, direct action to bring needed changes that politicians have failed to lead on. At their core is a love for the environment, community, humanity, and the planet - a love that trumps temporary financial gain and exposes the shallow aspirations of the destructive aspects of a capitalism devoid of compassion, heart, and accountability.

The SF LGBT Pride Committee Has Nothing to Be Proud of Over Bradley Manning | WorkersCompass.org | Published by Workers Action

The decision to rescind the invitation was made in less than 24 hours after the president of the American Military Partners Association (AMPA) made the request to reverse the invitation. The amazing election of Manning and subsequent and scandalous renunciation of that election, however, may prove to be the galvanizing point of the left of the LGBTQ community, which has become increasingly vocal in criticizing the conservative bastion that promotes a pro-corporate atmosphere of the Parade and Festival. Indeed, there is the beginning of a struggle and a political revival of the SF Pride Parade as a vehicle for raising awareness of progressive political causes because of the latest Manning decision.

David Graeber, who was actively involved in the early days of Occupy Wall Street and continues to work to advance its principles, starts his new book The Democracy Project with a fascinating (if long) personal history of how OWS found its legs and what it had to deal with (notably the brutal suppression of November 2011 when the governments of the day decided to shut down the protest through a sustained, globally coordinated and ruthless operation, and the disgraceful behaviour of the media ‘covering’ the movement, and then abruptly not covering it at all).

Europe's Moral Quandary: The High Human Price of Cheap T-Shirts - Spiegel Online | real utopias | Scoop.it

Jamil can't stop thinking about the voices that came from the building: a mixture of pleading, praying, screaming and whimpering that rose from the mountain of ruins. "We heard people calling for help. We heard them begging for water and reciting prayers," the fireman recalls. "But we couldn't do anything for them. So many of them were simply beyond our reach." They helped those they could, bringing food and water to people trapped in accessible cavities within the giant mound of rubble that days before was still a functioning factory building.
