An Introduction to Marx's Theory - Socialist Project

An Introduction to Marx's Theory - Socialist Project | real utopias | Scoop.it

Dan Swain (DS): I wrote about alienation for my master's thesis, in which I was particularly interested in the way in which the idea of alienation can form an ethical core to Marx's wider critique of society. I found that a lot of the books about alienation that are out there are highly academic, and many of them are decades old, and so are stuck in older debates which are less relevant to today. It was great to get the opportunity to write something accessible, and in the process help me get clearer about my own ideas. I think the number of books about Capital reflects an understandable desire to re-engage with political economy after the crisis, and that should be welcomed. There's also a legacy of academic debates which have tended to deprioritize Marx's earlier writings. Nonetheless, the central idea behind alienation, that our social forms of life are organized in such a way that is radically bad for us, not just because of inequality or material poverty, but because they prevent us from living a fulfilled life, seems to me still profoundly relevant.

Making Green Housing Affordable | Solutions | real utopias | Scoop.it

What comes to mind when you think about green communities? I find many people think about technology—solar panels, wind turbines, or rapid public transit. Another important pillar of green communities is action: the actions people take related to the buildings in which they live. Green communities must incorporate technology and action.

I know he is familiar with integral theory (he did a series on Integral Ecology a while back, as well as some reading of Wilber in terms of process philosophy - see all of his integral theory posts), but I suspect he would not identify as an integral philosopher.

Social and Political Diversity and the Democratic Road to Change in Venezuela - Venezuelanalysis.com

Social and Political Diversity and the Democratic Road to Change in Venezuela - Venezuelanalysis.com | real utopias | Scoop.it

The rapid unfolding of change and radicalization, which have characterized the presidency of Hugo Chávez since its beginning in 1999, have impacted non-elite social groups in different ways, sometimes favoring one at the expense of another. Each stage has privileged different programs, goals, slogans and currents within the Chavista movement, and has had distinct ideological implications. The process of radicalization was influenced by the aspirations of sectors within the movement and the ideological vision of the leadership, but it was also largely a response to the actions and tactics of government adversaries.

Slavoj Zizek - Why the free market fundamentalists think 2013 will be the best year ever

The Christmas issue of the Spectator ran an editorial entitled "Why 2012 was the best year ever". It argued against the perception that we live in "a dangerous, cruel world where things are bad and getting worse". Here is the opening paragraph: "It may not feel like it, but 2012 has been the greatest year in the history of the world. That sounds like an extravagant claim, but it is borne out by evidence. Never has there been less hunger, less disease or more prosperity. The west remains in the economic doldrums, but most developing countries are charging ahead, and people are being lifted out of poverty at the fastest rate ever recorded. The death toll inflicted by war and natural disasters is also mercifully low. We are living in a golden age."

Protest at the speed of light: social networking the revolution - Links International Journal of Socialist Renewal | real utopias | Scoop.it

May 8, 2013 -- Links International Journal of Socialist Renewal -- Increasing access to the internet, together with the development in social network sites and mobile devices, has resulted in the ability for individuals and communities to be able to quickly share information, ideas and proposals for action to an ever-increasing audience. This has allowed protest movements to promote and have their voices heard outside traditional mass media outlets and government institutions that have excluded them in the past.

DoTEc-Colombia - Abstract Labour Theory of Value and Theory of Price

DoTEc-Colombia - Abstract Labour Theory of Value and Theory of Price | real utopias | Scoop.it

The renewal of Marx's interpretation of capitalist society implies the recovery and development of his Theory of Value. The stream of thought known as Abstract Labour Theory of Value, or New Interpretation, proposes to do this, and points out that value is a category that is formed in the interaction between production and circulation (and not just in production, as the Ricardian conception). The theory of value exceeds a theory of price, but requires this piece of analysis that for now is underdeveloped. This paper aims to contribute to the task of constructing a price theory compatible with the abstract labor theory of value, and approaches this task in a simple commodity economy scheme.

Exclusive interview with Noam Chomsky on Pakistan elections

Exclusive interview with Noam Chomsky on Pakistan elections | real utopias | Scoop.it

Professor Emeritus at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Noam Chomsky, is without doubt the most widely heard and read public intellectual alive today. Although trained in linguistics, he has written on and extensively critiqued a wide range of topics, including US foreign policy, mainstream media discourses and anarchist philosophy. Chomsky's work in linguistics revolutionised the field and he has been described as the 'father of modern linguistics'. Professor Chomsky, along with other luminaries such as Howard Zinn and Dr Eqbal Ahmad, came into prominence during the anti-Vietnam War movement in the 1960s and has since spoken in support of national liberation movements (and against US imperialism) in countries such as Palestine, El Salvador and Nicaragua. In fact, his prolificacy in terms of academic and non-academic writing has earned him a spot among the ten most cited sources of all time (alongside Aristotle, Marx and Plato). Now in his mid-80s, Professor Chomsky shows no signs of slowing down and maintains an active lecturing and interview schedule. Here we caught up with him to get his views on upcoming Pakistani elections, American influence in the region and other issues.
