Unlike sharing risks, capital and opportunities in a cooperative, the main tool protecting Uddertech from being run over by large firms with more market power are federal and state regulations. These attempt to curb excesses of monopoly power, collusion, fraud, high-margin investing and other tools of anti-trust practices.

Locality: Scaling up not always best - The Guardian (blog) | real utopias | Scoop.it

We would argue that the idea economies of scale is not an immutable law when applied to the delivery of services. Things can become more expensive when you do them at scale because management costs often multiply rather than divide. Our research project to investigate these assertions and is expected to be completed by spring 2013.

Designing for the Other 90% | Reality Sandwich

Designing for the Other 90% | Reality Sandwich | real utopias | Scoop.it

I had a chance to see the Design with the Other 90% Cities exhibit last year at the UN in New York, and it was very impressive. It featured 60 projects in six categories Exchange, Reveal, Adapt, Include, Prosper and Access in which interdisciplinary groups of professionals and communities designed effective solutions for problems which plague the one billion people now living in urban slums around the world. It reminded me of the potential power for good in the field of sustainable design, and how it now involves so much more than creating expensive green gadgets.

Will Pay For Performance Backfire? Insights From Behavioral Economics – Health Affairs Blog | real utopias | Scoop.it
Findings from the new field of behavioral economics may explain these negative results. They challenge the traditional economic view that monetary reward is either the only motivator or is simply additive to intrinsic motivators such as purpose or altruism. Studies have shown that monetary rewards can undermine motivation and worsen performance on cognitively complex and intrinsically rewarding work, suggesting that P4P may backfire.

Occupy DC One Year Later - Huffington Post

Occupy DC One Year Later - Huffington Post | real utopias | Scoop.it

Perhaps a one-year anniversary is the best time to look around and, with some degree of closure, celebrate growth, and acknowledge the need for more. Occupy, as a singular entity, is dead. The tactic of occupying has obviously run its course, and, as Occupy D.C.'s one-year anniversary demonstrated, the tactic of marching as a primary form of direct action -- without being part of a concerted campaign -- is spent.

'Occupy Unmasked'—Unmasked - The Nation. | real utopias | Scoop.it

It's not that Occupy Wall Street, on principle, is undeserving of criticism. Theoretically, some conservative opponent could make a sensible film pointing out its various shortcomings. But Occupy Unmasked, a “documentary” starring the late Andrew Breitbart, is just total fantasy: a deranged hodge-podge of bizarre memes, wild dot-connecting and unadulterated fury. Its central thesis holds that the movement was founded as—and remains—an elaborate front for the Obama reelection effort, having been surreptitiously organized by actors ranging from the SEIU, Rachel Maddow and “professional anarchists” to Amy Goodman, Hamas, Russia Today, Matt Taibbi and the Anonymous hacktivist collective. Indeed, these folks all conspired, in the words of Citizens United president David Bossie, to “destroy the very fabric of America.”

The concluding chapter in Canadian filmmaker Velcrow Ripper’s “Fierce Love” trilogy, Occupy Love – which premiered this week at the Vancouver International Film Festival — is a testament to a revolution as yet unfinished, and a plea not to succumb to hate, and instead place love at the centre of our struggles for a better world.

A question of ethics - International Socialism Journal

A question of ethics - International Socialism Journal | real utopias | Scoop.it

Ethics has been a problematic area for Marxism ever since its beginnings. Marx himself wrote very little on the topic, and what he did write seems paradoxical. On the one hand, he appears to deny that his outlook involves ethical values at all. Socialism, he insists, is not a mere ethical ideal; it is rather the real and concrete form of society that will result from the revolutionary forces currently at work in capitalist society. “The working classes have no fixed and perfect utopias to introduce…they have no ideals to realise; they have only to set at liberty the elements of the new society which have already been developed in the womb of the collapsing bourgeois society”.1 On the other hand, there is quite clearly a moral dimension to his criticisms of capitalist society and his vision of a socialist alternative.

Occupy Worcester one year later - Worcester Mag (blog) | real utopias | Scoop.it
Close to 200 people showed up to the first Occupy Worcester rally on Worcester Common a year ago. Twelve months later, as the group gathers on a brisk, sunny Monday to celebrate its anniversary, its ranks have thinned considerably. About three dozen or so members or supporters gather along a pathway running through the common. A female guitarist sings protest songs. A box of cupcakes tempts passersby. Mostly, though, the small contingent breaks up groups that share conversation, viewpoints and discussion.

Labour Struggle in a Peripheral Context: Debating Labour and ... | real utopias | Scoop.it

The peripheral context in the world capitalist system has been a constant centre of attention in debating alternatives. It is even more so under globalisation that has shifted labour-intensive production to the periphery often under conditions of precarity (Cox, 1987: 319). Moreover, dissent is on the rise in tandem with social cuts and austerity measures. The economic crisis provides opportunities to reflect upon new strategies for labour and the Left. In this guest post, Elif Uzgören debates the labour situation in a peripheral context – Turkey – against the background of globalisation and the transnationalisation of production.
