No to imperialist intervention in Syria!

No to imperialist intervention in Syria! | real utopias | Scoop.it

The report found at least 5,000 people have been dying in Syria every month since last July, with 30,000 killed since November. More than 80% of those killed were men, but the UN's Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) says it has also documented the deaths of more than 1,700 children under the age of 10.

How were these people killed? Not by chemical weapons, but by bullets, bombs, shrapnel or simple knives. Thousands have been slaughtered, many have had their throats cut. Children have been shot in front of their parents. Yet none of this was considered to be a “red line” for the ladies and gentlemen in Washington.

ERT (Greek state tv-radio) is dead: A blacklisted person’s lament | real utopias | Scoop.it

A few hours ago, the Greek government announced that state television and radio channels would be silenced at midnight. No public debate, no debate in Parliament, no warning. Nothing. ERT, the Greek version of the BBC, will simply fold its tent and steal into the night. As probably the only Greek commentator to have been blacklisted by ERT over the past two years, I feel I have the moral authority to cry out against ERT’s passing. To shout from the rooftops that its murder by our troika-led government is a crime against public media that all civilised people, the world over, should rise up against

Blood, Tear Gas, and Hipsters: On the Front Lines With Turkey's 'Occupy' Kids - New York Magazine | real utopias | Scoop.it

When all hell finally breaks loose in Gezi Park in the early hours of Tuesday morning, after days living in a dreamlike tranquility in their Zuccotti-style camp, the young, hip protestors spilling out of their tents into the darkness are still half-asleep. Clouds of tear gas billow all around. A line of riot police waits in Taksim Square, just outside the park’s walls.

Turkey and the Muslim Brotherhood: The Social Uprising against “Brother ... - Center for Research on Globalization | real utopias | Scoop.it

By showing its true nature, the Erdogan government has cut itself off from the population. Only a minority of Sunnis can identify with the backward and hypocritical programme of the Brothers. As it happens, about 50% of Turks are Sunni, 20% Alevi (that is to say Alawites), 20% are Kurds (mostly Sunni), and 10% belong to other minorities. It is statistically clear that the Erdogan government can not hold out against the uprising that its own policies helped to ignite.

I Occupy, Therefore I am : Michael | real utopias | Scoop.it

To occupy means to fill or take up a space of time. Once one has filled that space, they may, in theory, take charge of it. This is seen in statements like “the occupying army.” Of course, in order for you to decide to occupy somewhere you must not have been there in the first place. You can’t go to occupy the area where you already are.

Inside Story: Occupy Gezi Movement in Turkey; Development Is Not Always Good | The World Reporter: News Opinion and Analysis | real utopias | Scoop.it
Not always development makes citizen happy. This is what happening in Turkey. The government's plan of demolishing the Gezi park and constructing a shopping mall in the centre of the city has not attracted the backing of its own citizen. For any changes, whether it is development changes or changes in law in the country, government must consult with its citizen in a true democratic way, that's the message Occupy Gezi Movement is giving to the world.
