ZCommunications » Eastern Ukraine People’s Republics Between Militias and Oligarchs | real utopias | Scoop.it

The war between the Ukraine government and the republics of Novorossiya [New Russia] is gradually taking on the character of a positional stand-off. The resources of both sides are exhausted, and fighting reserves are at an end. For the people’s republics, defending themselves against the many times larger military forces of the Kiev regime, the well-known principle of “a government needs to win, but for an insurrection it is enough not to lose” operates with full force.

Scottish Independence Referendum: A Launch-Pad for a Participative Democracy?

Scottish Independence Referendum: A Launch-Pad for a Participative Democracy? | real utopias | Scoop.it

The countdown has begun. The Scottish Independence Referendum on Thursday the 18thof September provides the Scottish people with the opportunity to once more experience democracy in its most traditional form; at the ballot box, one person, one vote. However, on this occasion, rather than giving the polling station a modest reception, as seen in the AV referendum in 2011, or a distinctly lukewarm response, like at this year’s European Parliamentary election, engagement has surged dramatically with 97% of eligible citizens registered to vote, that’s 4,285,323 people! As a result many are predicting a turnout that will surpass Sweden’s commendable 83% showing in yesterday’s national election.

UN International Day of Democracy: Engaging young people on democracy - Jerusalem Post

UN International Day of Democracy: Engaging young people on democracy - Jerusalem Post | real utopias | Scoop.it

The 2014 United Nations International Day of Democracy brings to the fore a great question – that begs an answer – facing the youth of the world and especially in countries in the Middle East and North Africa: How can widespread and apparently uncompromising socio-economic despondency be addressed in a sustainable manner? The answer lies in applied action – through participatory democracy that engages individuals and communities in dialog and consensus-building, with the goal of identifying their development challenges and opportunities and creating a plan for shared action to achieve priority projects.

After Scotland decides: build citizen-centred democracy throughout Britain - Open Democracy

After Scotland decides: build citizen-centred democracy throughout Britain - Open Democracy | real utopias | Scoop.it

On Thursday, Scotland will vote. Suddenly Nigel Farage is all over the news saying the English are getting a raw deal and should get a ‘constitutional settlement of their own’.  As former and current Co-Convenors of Compass Greens, it’s unsurprising that we’ve been discussing and circulating ideas for a new social and constitutional compact. Unlike the UKIP demand for a federal UK based on Little England as a fortress outside the European Union, Greens and progressives should seize this historic moment to argue for a new constitutional and democratic compact, with electoral reform, including proportional representation for both houses of parliament, greater participatory democracy in the regions, and a written constitution with a citizens bill of rights.

Ecology and Politics in the 21st Century - CounterPunch

Ecology and Politics in the 21st Century - CounterPunch | real utopias | Scoop.it

Edited by CounterPunch regular Alexander Reid Ross and newly published by AK Press, Grabbing Back: Essays Against the Global Land Grab assembles a formidable collection of articles and reports written by scholars and activists from North and South alike who are concerned with the distressing acceleration of massive land-expropriations executed by capitalist interests in recent years. Otherwise known as the “New Scramble for Africa,” the “New Great Game,” or the “Global Land Rush,” the global land grab has involved the acquisition by foreign power-groups of anywhere between 56 and 203 million hectares of lands belonging to Southern societies since the turn of the millennium. The corporations responsible for this massive privatization scheme hail from both wealthy and middle-income countries: India, South Korea, Israel, Germany, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, China, and the U.S., among others.

Still, I hope this summary gives a flavour of its contents, and is of some use to all.

Ecological and Social Implications of Trans and Climate Change - Dissident Voice

Ecological and Social Implications of Trans and Climate Change - Dissident Voice | real utopias | Scoop.it

We are biological creatures, part of an ecosphere, living in communities. Like any other organism, our genetic code sets parameters within which we live. The ecosphere is governed by laws of physics and chemistry that set the parameters within which all organisms exist. And we encounter the world not as isolated, independent individuals but through social systems that affect how we understand ourselves and the possibilities for our lives.

Owen Jones' middle-class moralism - Spiked

Owen Jones' middle-class moralism - Spiked | real utopias | Scoop.it

Having caricatured the working classes in his first book, Owen Jones caricatures the ruling classes in his second. Where in Chavs the less well-off were held aloft by our pitying author as the ‘victims of social problems’, ‘vulnerable’, and ‘lacking… toys, days out, good food’, in The Establishment the rulers of society are denounced as ‘venal’, ‘greedy’, ‘despicable’, ‘zealots’, ‘scroungers’, and possibly even psychopathic. To read Jones’ books is to enter into a super-moralistic world in which all shades of grey have been banned for fear of muddying the narrative. There are only the put-upon and the putters-upon. It must be nice to live in such a binary moral universe. I wish I lived there.

But Americans are misreading the recent Islamic State successes, which speak less to the group’s invincibility and inevitability than they do to external factors beyond its control. Despite its territorial gains and mastery of propaganda, the Islamic State’s fundamentals are weak, and it does not have a sustainable endgame. In short, we’re giving it too much credit.

Why Scotland Might Break Away From the United Kingdom - National Geographic | real utopias | Scoop.it

In 1746 forces loyal to Bonny Prince Charlie, the last Stuart claimant to the throne of Scotland, were crushed at the Battle of Culloden, near Inverness. Almost 40 years earlier, in 1707, the Act of Union bound together England, Scotland, and Wales. Culloden—the last pitched battle fought on British soil—had marked the death knell for the Scottish dream of independence.
