Beyond Africa rising: Future of global economy's 'last frontier' - The Guardian Nigeria

IN the past decade Africa has emerged in the world’s consciousness in the context of an evolution in the continent’s image. Africa is not yet seen as the place to be, to go to, or to be envied in terms of economic and societal progress. Indeed, still too many people around the world hold a decidedly different view.

Thailand: Revolution by Motorcycle? - The New York Review of Books (blog) | real utopias | Scoop.it

In the spring of 2010, when as many as 300,000 political protesters from Thailand’s Red Shirt movement occupied Bangkok’s main commercial district, they were helped by an unusual ally: tens of thousands of motorcycle taxi drivers. With their ability to navigate obstructed streets, the motorcycle taxis transported Red Shirt leaders through otherwise barricaded parts of the downtown. And they carried messages, money, and materials to the protesters, including the makings of Molotov cocktails. Eventually the military used lethal force to chase the Red Shirts from the streets, killing about seventy of them. But the remarkable involvement of the motorcycle taxi drivers signaled a deep change in Thailand, a new willingness on the part of previously disenfranchised groups to defy authority.

P2P Foundation » Blog Archive » Various Dimensions of the Concept of Common Good

“The notion of Common Good has known lately a new interest. For some it is the renewal of an old idea and the opportunity of giving to conservative forces of society the appearance of a modern approach. For others it is a way of coming out of a stereotyped vocabulary used by revolutionary movements and to propose a more acceptable way of expression. It may also be related with a radical criticism of the concept of modernity transmitted by capitalism and not challenged by real socialism. In order to develop this late conception, it is important to indicate three levels of its semantic utilization: Common Goods, Common Good and Common Good of Humanity.

While the PSUV never became the party Chavez wanted during his lifetime, the former leader demonstrated that he was able to use his authority to maintain unity among competing currents of opinion, while simultaneously encouraging greater grassroots empowerment. Maduro now faces a critical test as to whether he can follow the same path, and in the process help put the PSUV back on its original course.

Interview with Prof. David Harvey

Interview with Prof. David Harvey | real utopias | Scoop.it

It is our pleasure to share the interview we did with Prof. David Harvey’s kind acceptance to meeting request during his visit in March 2014. Also, due to some unexpected situations, it is our fault to publish this interview quite late. We are deeply sorry for latency. It would have been surely nice to make this interview accessible around the times we were constantly thinking the Gezi Protests. However, regardless of the deference, it might be possible to say that the questions and Harvey’s answers are still equipped with relevant insight. It is not about short questions and easy answers. So we hope, this effort would be a contribution to our broader understanding of the surroundings all across the globe.

Feminism and (Un)Hacking » Journal of Peer Production

Feminism and (Un)Hacking » Journal of Peer Production | real utopias | Scoop.it

There has been a recent growth in interest in feminist approaches to practices like hacking, tinkering, geeking and making. What started off as an interest in furthering representations of women in the technical fields of computer science and engineering, often along the lines of liberal feminism, has now grown into social, cultural, and political analyses of gendered modes of social reproduction, expertise, and work, among others. Practices of hacking, tinkering, geeking, and making have been criticized for their overtly masculinist approaches, often anchored in the Euro-American techno-centers of Silicon Valley and Cambridge that have created a culture of entrepreneurial heroism and a certain understanding of technopolitical liberation, or around the German Chaos Computer Club (CCC).

What kind of revolution? - Daily Times

The word “revolution” has been derived from the Latin word revolutio, meaning “a turnaround”, is a fundamental change in power or organisational structure that takes place in a relatively short period of time. The Greek philosopher Aristotle, in Politics Book V, explains that there are two types of political revolution: the first is a complete change from one constitution to another constitution and the second is modifications leading to reforms, which in plain words means reforming the existing constitution into a more precise political system. Early scholarly debates and analysis of events in European history from the psychological perceptive and more modern, advanced scholarly debates have considered political science, economic science and social science as well. Over a period of 300 years, scholarly debates have simplified the complexity related to revolution.
