In December 2007, the administration of the Greek public television and radio broadcasting company ERT inaugurated a new website where people can only watch parts of the audiovisual archive of ERT. Although the digitisation of such a precious treasure is a positive initiative, ERT showed complete disregard for the citizens by whom the company has been funded for decades: Delete the scoop?

Historically, participatory budgeting has been used to uplift the poorest residents of an area, and to empower those who have long been disenfranchised by the existing political processes. In the late 1980s, the Workers’ Party invented PB in Porto Alegre, Brazil, as a radically democratic response to the military dictatorship that had denied working- and lower-class citizens even the most basic amenities for decades. After taking control of much of the city budget, residents built affordable housing, paved roads, erected public schools and delivered clean drinking water to what had been the city’s most neglected people. Two weeks after the court-martial proceeding of Bradley Manning began, an unauthorized audio recording of Manning's courtroom statement spread through social media despite extraordinary secrecy surrounding his trial. In it, Manning laid out why he chose to release the massive trove of documents. After admitting that he was the source of the largest leak of classified information in history, he spoke about the motivation behind his actions: "I believed that if the general public, especially the American public, had access to the information ... this could spark a domestic debate on the role of the military and our foreign policy in general." Attorney Michael Ratner said of Manning; "To lock him up for even a day is to lock up the conscience of our nation." Delete the scoop?

“The future of the Euro zone looks pretty dim unless primarily Germany changes its stance”, says Noam Chomsky. Germany was forgiven its huge debt by European countries after World War II so it could grow its way out of the crisis and became the major industrial center of Europe. Now Germany is in the lead in trying to prevent similar policies. “Austerity is no way to get out of a crisis, it just makes it worse”. Even the International Monetary Fund has pulled back from it. Meanwhile the famous article of the Harvard economists Reinhart and Rogoff which was used as the intellectual foundation of the austerity programs turned out to be flawed. “Deficits do in fact provide and stimulate demand. (…) Overcoming deficit is not a problem. It´s a problem for the banks and therefore it´s the center of the political debate because of their political power.” But for the population polls show the problem is jobs. “The lack of jobs is destroying a whole generation with all kinds of consequences for the future. In Europe it is even worse. And it is also harming the economy. A huge amount of potential growth is being destroyed because we have to worry about the non-existent threat of inflation.” The public just has less and less say when it comes to neoliberal policies, social cuts and free trade. “It´s not irreversible and there is plenty of protests. It might crystallize into popular movements which will compel serious changes. But it´s a long way to go and Germany is in the center of it because of its power.” Delete the scoop?

“Medieval Iceland is perhaps the closest approximation of an anarchist or libertarian republic that the world is likely to see. Founded in the years between 870 and 930. when its Althing and legal system were established, Iceland was settled by people unwilling to submit to a more coercive and, as the sages describe it, tyrannical Norwegian monarchy.” (Pencak 1995: 1).

In a posting to localfoodsystems.org on Feb 04, 2010, Steve Bosserman introduced the idea of “Production Centered Local Economies”, and “People Centered Local Economies”. This article synthesizes Steve’s coining of those terms, and uses concepts developed by Sam Rose, Paul Hartzog and Richard C Adler of Forward Foundation to further explain the differences between these economies, from a business development perspective. “Ever since there has been a capitalist world-economy, one essential mechanism of its successful functioning has been the runaway factory. After a period of significant accumulation of capital by so-called leading industries (usually about twenty-five years), the level of profit has gone down, both because of the undermining of the quasi-monopoly of the leading industry and because of the rise in labor costs due to syndical action of some sort. “Greening through IT is well written, incredibly well researched, and most timely. There is no doubt now that the planet is in trouble, and that our present energy consumption levels, waste (both personal and industrial) and pollution levels are far too high to allow life to continue as we know it. How long it will take before catastrophic changes occur is a matter of speculation, some say 10 years some say 100! Whichever, these time spans are minuscule compared to the time it has taken earth, and all the various species (including humans) to evolve to the present. One of Tomlinson’s main arguments throughout this book is the inability of humans to understand long time spans. As he points out we are going to have to improve this faculty and implement long-term changes that consider future generations. Delete the scoop?

Public broadcasting is a crucial public service. The public at large pay for this vital media outlet as a fundamental source of its daily information, as a central means of embracing participatory democracy through well-informed citizens. Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras has described these measures as a temporary move, stating that the government is “protecting the public interest.” Delete the scoop?

"...it's time to start thinking about our automated future in earnest, and to broaden the discussions on increased swarm redistribution such as that of a #basicincome. The history of mass technological unemployment isn't pretty—fascists in the '20s, Nazis in the '30s—and recent high levels of precariousness in Greece and Italy have already produced riots in the streets and larger followings for right-wing populist parties. And that's after only a few years of misery." Delete the scoop?

There are many people who regard themselves as left-wing who do not want to get rid of capitalism. Not only Ed Miliband & others in the Labour party, but also some who consider themselves to the left of Labour. They believe capitalism can be made more equal through government action & that the post-war period demonstrates this. In my opinion, they fail to appreciate the material conditions. The outcome document from the 2012 UN Conference on Sustainable Development, Rio+20—entitled (The Future We Want)—does not go nearly far enough to articulate what the vast majority of people around the world need, facing a future constrained by income and wealth inequalities, volatile and fragile financial and economic systems, resource depletion, global warming, and other planetary boundaries. How were these people killed? Not by chemical weapons, but by bullets, bombs, shrapnel or simple knives. Thousands have been slaughtered, many have had their throats cut. Children have been shot in front of their parents. Yet none of this was considered to be a “red line” for the ladies and gentlemen in Washington. Delete the scoop?
