Playboy Interview: Paul Krugman : Playboy.com | real utopias | Scoop.it

How can winning a Nobel Prize in economics seem like it’s no big deal? Well, if you’ve already won the John Bates Clark Medal—an honor bestowed biennially on the American economist under 40 who has made major contributions to his profession—you’ve already taken home a piece of hardware considered by many economists to be slightly harder to win than a Nobel. Only 12 people have won both, including Paul Krugman, who collected the 1991 Clark and then snagged the Nobel (and its $1.4 million check) in 2008.

Why is capitalism redundant? - Daily Times

Why is capitalism redundant? - Daily Times | real utopias | Scoop.it

While debates in the media and politics rage on about the issues of diplomacy, military campaigns, terrorism, fundamentalism, judiciary, constitutional complexities, etc, discussion on the crumbling economy and the aggravating suffering of the masses is being conveniently ignored. The failure and paralysis of the economic policies of the ‘experts’ of this system in decay has been starkly laid bare. With the cancerous growth of the parallel or black economy to more than two thirds of the total economy, the chances of any healthy revival of capitalism and development of society has been ruled out. In reality, capitalist crisis on a world scale has reached a juncture where it cannot improve living conditions and advance society as in the post-World War II period, anywhere.

Greece is being destroyed by 'respectable' fanatics | Nick Cohen

Greece is being destroyed by 'respectable' fanatics | Nick Cohen | real utopias | Scoop.it

reek democracy is being destroyed. Not by soldiers marching with insane slogans on their lips about the inevitable triumph of the German master race, international proletariat or global jihad, but by moderate men and women who think themselves immune to ideological frenzy. Greece's enemies are novel, but no less frightening for that: extremists from the centre ground; the respectable running riot.

The Communist Manifesto Today - Dissident Voice

Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels published the Manifesto of the Communist Party in 1848. By no means did Marx and Engels set out to read the fortune of future capitalist societies, or to develop some high-resolution photograph of future international political economy amongst states. Nor did they predict the various incarnations of communism that would arise after their time. Instead, the manifesto was a commissioned work; its intention was to communicate the purposes and platform of the Communist League, an international political party started in 1847 London.

Follow your convictions – this could be the end of the politics of fear | George Monbiot

Follow your convictions – this could be the end of the politics of fear | George Monbiot | real utopias | Scoop.it
ere is the first rule of politics: if you never vote for what you want, you never get it. We are told at every election to hold our noses, forget the deficiencies and betrayals and vote Labour yet again, for fear of something worse. And there will, of course, always be something worse. So at what point should we vote for what we want rather than keep choosing between two versions of market fundamentalism? Sometime this century? Or in the next? Follow the advice of the noseholders and we will be lost forever in Labour’s Bermuda triangulation.
