Alice Peurala: A Woman of Steel - Bob Simpson - Open Salon

Alice Peurala: A Woman of Steel - Bob Simpson - Open Salon | real utopias | Scoop.it

Throughout her life, Alice Peurala was devoted to the idea of democracy. She was on the right track. If we are to revive manufacturing as well as the rest of our economy, we will need to do it differently than in the past. Until we learn how to apply democracy to our economics we will continue to be trapped in an inefficient, wasteful, polluting system that degrades our humanity and the planet we live on.

Democracy, capitalism and the defence of kindness - rabble.ca

Democracy, capitalism and the defence of kindness - rabble.ca | real utopias | Scoop.it

I confess. I have been binge-watching TV series. Lately I have narrowed my watching mostly to The West Wing, an old favourite about a Democratic president, Jed Bartlet, which portrays the manic, day-to-day crisis management of the White House. But in my defence, I am doing so in part as an antidote to another series which I quit watching because the values it displayed and promoted were so execrable. The award-winningHouse of Cards stars Kevin Spacey as a ruthless congressman seeking revenge (and higher office) for being betrayed by "his" president. Both these series are exceptionally well-written and well-acted. But one actually features characters who are trying to accomplish laudable social objectives (for the most part) and who treat each other with genuine respect and even affection. House of Cards never allows such sentiment to prevail or even appear except as a reflection of weakness and naïveté. It's all about varying degrees of ruthlessness and we are clearly supposed to admire Spacey as a masterful practitioner of the Machiavellian arts.

The need for a democratic formative culture and the necessity to take the educative nature of politics seriously raises crucial questions about the educative nature of politics and how the public pedagogy produced by the old and new media can be used to expand rather than close down democratic relations.

The Revolution May Not Always Be Televised, But It Damn Sure Will Be #Tweeted - AllHipHop

The Revolution May Not Always Be Televised, But It Damn Sure Will Be #Tweeted - AllHipHop | real utopias | Scoop.it

When we hear the word revolution, one usually tends to think of images of rioting, unrest and utter chaos. But a revolutioncan also mean a break from traditional thinking; a revamp of the way we view things, accept stated norms and conduct ourselves. At this very moment, there is a national and global revolution taking place concerning a host of issues: how we gather news and information, the way we disseminate that information, rights of civilians, police (mis)conduct, freedom to assemble, the right of self-expression, the Israel-Gaza conflict, militarization of police, war and much more. And what is one main underlying thread among all of these shifts in public opinion? Young people.

When police in Ferguson, Missouri, released a video showing Michael Brown allegedly robbing a store and shoving around a clerk just hours before the unarmed teen was shot dead in a seemingly unrelated confrontation with an officer, many accused the department of engaging in deliberate character assassination — a tactic that some rights advocates say is commonly used against African-American victims of excessive force in an attempt to shift blame from perpetrators to victims.
