This advertisement targets nurses and doctors and introduces a system that allows them to sign up for shifts that they want.

The Internet transforms the work environment in many ways by providing workers with resources to make their every day lives easier. Doctors and Nurses, especially when working in the Emergency Room, can get called in at any time. Before the Internet, there was no way for doctors to have access to the main schedule. Changing shifts would also require contacting the main desk, who would have to contact other doctors or nurses, and report to who ever wanted to change his or her shift whether or not the switch would work. Now, the Internet allows for everyone to have instant access to the shift schedule and offers the options for people to communicate with the touch of a button. This can save time, money, and more importantly - lives.

“On the Phenomenon of Bullshit Jobs” by David Graeber | Abolish ...

“On the Phenomenon of Bullshit Jobs” by David Graeber | Abolish ... | real utopias | Scoop.it

If someone had designed a work regime perfectly suited to maintaining the power of finance capital, it’s hard to see how they could have done a better job. Real, productive workers are relentlessly squeezed and exploited. The remainder are divided between a terrorised stratum of the, universally reviled, unemployed and a larger stratum who are basically paid to do nothing, in positions designed to make them identify with the perspectives and sensibilities of the ruling class (managers, administrators, etc) – and particularly its financial avatars – but, at the same time, foster a simmering resentment against anyone whose work has clear and undeniable social value. Clearly, the system was never consciously designed. It emerged from almost a century of trial and error. But it is the only explanation for why, despite our technological capacities, we are not all working 3-4 hour days.

Why Does Equal Pay Really Matter? - Huffington Post

Why Does Equal Pay Really Matter? - Huffington Post | real utopias | Scoop.it

There is no question that women and minorities are not at salary parity with white males in our business culture. They are not. But the prevailing myth that this is an evil plot to oppress us doesn't fly with me, because when you look under the covers of equal pay, things get much more complex. In sum, the current wage gap serves a purpose, both for businesses and for many women themselves; and in doing so it's undermining the interests and needs of us all.

David Graeber - The Struggle Against Work - Eagainst.com

David Graeber - The Struggle Against Work - Eagainst.com | real utopias | Scoop.it

The struggle against work has always been central to anarchist organizing. By this I mean, not the struggle for better worker conditions or higher wages, but the struggle to eliminate work, as a relation of domination, entirely. Hence the IWW slogan “against the wage system.” This is a long-term goal of course. In the shorter term, what can’t be eliminated can at least be reduced. Around the turn of the century, the Wobblies and other anarchists played the central role in winning workers the 5-day week and 8-hour day.

Among American workers, poll finds unprecedented anxiety about jobs, economy - Washington Post

Among American workers, poll finds unprecedented anxiety about jobs, economy - Washington Post | real utopias | Scoop.it

CHESTER, Pa. — The alarm rang on John Stewart’s phone at 1:10 a.m. Up at 1:30, he caught one bus north into Philadelphia a little after 2 and another bus, south toward the airport, half an hour after that. He made it into work around 3:25 for a shift that started at 4, for a job that pays $5.25 an hour, which he cannot afford to lose.

Why work if a machine takes your job? - The Herald | HeraldOnline.com

Why work if a machine takes your job? - The Herald | HeraldOnline.com | real utopias | Scoop.it

Most economists will tell you that workers displaced by technological progress and globalization should be able to find comparable employment elsewhere – or at least that the income losses of those who lose their jobs are more than offset by the broader gains to consumers as a whole.

Yet you have to wonder if that’s quite right. Is it possible that machines and trade might eventually polarize the rich world’s labor force into two distinct classes: servants and elites?
