In the red corner: Russell Brand, the Hollywood sybarite and cockney yogi who has travelled a path from drug addiction to enlightment, and now political action. His new book Revolution is a call to arms for the disenfranchised in Britain, those who feel underserved or outright ignored by the powers that be, and aims to catalyse them with a typically manic mix of transcendental meditation, Thomas Piketty and the 12 steps.

Linda Herrera's Revolution in the Age of Social Media: The Egyptian Popular Insurrection and the Internet, released just last week, garners high praise from the Globe and Mail's Simon Lewsen. In Lewsen's review, where he analyzes the positive but more oftentimes hotly-debated relationship between social media and activism, he calls Herrera's writing "expansive and curious" and "a smart approach" to a complicated subject.

A Practical Utopian’s Guide to the Coming Collapse - The Baffler

A Practical Utopian’s Guide to the Coming Collapse - The Baffler | real utopias | Scoop.it

hat is a revolution? We used to think we knew. Revolutions were seizures of power by popular forces aiming to transform the very nature of the political, social, and economic system in the country in which the revolution took place, usually according to some visionary dream of a just society. Nowadays, we live in an age when, if rebel armies do come sweeping into a city, or mass uprisings overthrow a dictator, it’s unlikely to have any such implications; when profound social transformation does occur—as with, say, the rise of feminism—it’s likely to take an entirely different form. It’s not that revolutionary dreams aren’t out there. But contemporary revolutionaries rarely think they can bring them into being by some modern-day equivalent of storming the Bastille.

The Revolution May Not Always Be Televised, But It Damn Sure Will Be #Tweeted - AllHipHop | real utopias | Scoop.it

When we hear the word revolution, one usually tends to think of images of rioting, unrest and utter chaos. But a revolutioncan also mean a break from traditional thinking; a revamp of the way we view things, accept stated norms and conduct ourselves. At this very moment, there is a national and global revolution taking place concerning a host of issues: how we gather news and information, the way we disseminate that information, rights of civilians, police (mis)conduct, freedom to assemble, the right of self-expression, the Israel-Gaza conflict, militarization of police, war and much more. And what is one main underlying thread among all of these shifts in public opinion? Young people.

What kind of revolution? - Daily Times

The word “revolution” has been derived from the Latin word revolutio, meaning “a turnaround”, is a fundamental change in power or organisational structure that takes place in a relatively short period of time. The Greek philosopher Aristotle, in Politics Book V, explains that there are two types of political revolution: the first is a complete change from one constitution to another constitution and the second is modifications leading to reforms, which in plain words means reforming the existing constitution into a more precise political system. Early scholarly debates and analysis of events in European history from the psychological perceptive and more modern, advanced scholarly debates have considered political science, economic science and social science as well. Over a period of 300 years, scholarly debates have simplified the complexity related to revolution.

The citizens will inevitably push for change if their aspirations are not met - The Standard Digital News | real utopias | Scoop.it

Sometime in the mid-1960s when the People’s Republic of China (PRC) was accused of fermenting revolutions in Africa, Chairman Mao Tse Tung, then Chairman of the Communist Party and head of the Chinese government, vehemently denied the charge. On the contrary, he argued it was neither the responsibility nor the intention of the PRC to do any such thing in developing countries faced with the ravages of colonialism and domineering tendencies of imperialism.
