Democracy, capitalism and the defence of kindness - rabble.ca

Democracy, capitalism and the defence of kindness - rabble.ca | real utopias | Scoop.it

I confess. I have been binge-watching TV series. Lately I have narrowed my watching mostly to The West Wing, an old favourite about a Democratic president, Jed Bartlet, which portrays the manic, day-to-day crisis management of the White House. But in my defence, I am doing so in part as an antidote to another series which I quit watching because the values it displayed and promoted were so execrable. The award-winningHouse of Cards stars Kevin Spacey as a ruthless congressman seeking revenge (and higher office) for being betrayed by "his" president. Both these series are exceptionally well-written and well-acted. But one actually features characters who are trying to accomplish laudable social objectives (for the most part) and who treat each other with genuine respect and even affection. House of Cards never allows such sentiment to prevail or even appear except as a reflection of weakness and naïveté. It's all about varying degrees of ruthlessness and we are clearly supposed to admire Spacey as a masterful practitioner of the Machiavellian arts.

Democracy the Corporate World Dislikes - Mainstream

Democracy the Corporate World Dislikes - Mainstream | real utopias | Scoop.it

The West is known for its rich tradition of being a constant champion of the values of democracy such as equality, freedom, rights, and justice. It has legitimised its positive intervention in all wars against democracy across the world. However, while the success of democracy lies in strengthening decentralisation, the democratic capitalist countries have campai-gned for the corporate world which privileges an integrated market economy that prevents redistribution of the basic productive resources. This has resulted in an iniquitous society which establishes the hegemony of the capitalist/corporate world.

'Democracy in the Making' details how open discussion fuels action - Middletown Press

'Democracy in the Making' details how open discussion fuels action - Middletown Press | real utopias | Scoop.it

MIDDLETOWN >> Recently, most books on American political history have focused on iconic leaders such as George Washington, James Madison, Abe Lincoln, Benjamin Franklin and the usually overlooked Alexander Hamilton. Award-winning book covers of American history reflect this trend: recent winners have gone to books on Franklin, Lincoln and Madison. Even a book on American Loyalists (aka the pro-British colonialists) received an award. Covers are just one indication of the value of a book. Many illustrators are well-paid. The cover is the product of thorough discussion regarding its marketing appeal, and its relationship to the significance of the topic.

Democracy in Crisis: Toward a Foundational, Alternative Theory of Participatory Democracy - Heathwood Press

Democracy in Crisis: Toward a Foundational, Alternative Theory of Participatory Democracy - Heathwood Press | real utopias | Scoop.it

Democracy is in crisis. Everywhere one turns one is confronted by the contradiction between what Democracy promises (its ideals) and that which it actually delivers. One need look no further than the collapse of the global financial system that occurred in 2008 to see the problems inflicted upon the world by what purports to be Democracy. And because democracy and capitalism remain conflated, and politics and economics are too often mistaken for being distinct spheres, this raises an important issue. How does the global financial crisis reveal the dire state of contemporary democracy? The answer is as simple as it is complex. Democracy today, as a concept and as a thing, has less to do with the actual content of “democracy” as an egalitarian system of political-economic values than it does with the neglect of this content for its (mere) form. More simply put, the concept of democracy in the West is the mere distillate remaining after the actual content (Equality, Egalitarianism, Justice, Rights, etc.) has been boiled away.

Is democracy possible? - OpEdNews

Is democracy possible? - OpEdNews | real utopias | Scoop.it

Occupy showed that the desire for real democracy runs deep in the US, uniting people across the political spectrum. From communists to libertarian conservatives, all who took part recognized that the US government is not one of, by, and for the People. Occupy's emphasis on the crimes of the banksters responsible for the economic crisis that sparked the protest brought attention to the fact that a tiny group of the economic elite control the fate of millions through their control over the US government. However, failure to organize action around an agenda for change left some observers wondering whether We the People could effectively govern ourselves. For many, it merely highlighted what they see as the drawbacks to popular rule. When everyone is pursuing their own agenda, chaos seems to result.
