Facebook will be joining a group of more than 20 ad exchanges - Google Adwords, Microsoft Ad Exchange, Right Media Exchange (Yahoo) - who trade in real time display advertising across the entire internet. These demand side platforms allow advertisers to bid on ad impressions in real time.

 

The privacy issue is raised by the practice of utilizing demographic information to profile consumers and track their activity anywhere on the net. This is called retargeting. This is a feature that makes it possible to display the same ad on many websites depending on who is viewing the ad.

 

Have you noticed that the related video sidebar in Youtube always seems to display videos that you are interested in? Or that you see the same banner ads everywhere? You are being retargeted.

I'd missed that the big G now owns Doubleclick. Remarketing is another way of saying retargeting. Closing the loop means finding folks interests and reminding them of it through display advertising, in real time, as they browse the web.
