#2: They share what they had for lunch. Just kidding. The real #2 is: Successful social media people listen. Listening means they monitor, observe, and respond based on what they learn. They engage. My colleague Kelly Clay shared on Twitter: They use that listening mode to share and promote others content.

Ask yourself, “What audience can social media help us reach that we have been struggling with? What type of content could we produce that enhances the customer experience? What type of relevant content can we curate from other sources that our audience would find interesting? Will social media align with customer service? Or does social best align with marketing?”

Ineffective Strategies
What is unlikely to bring back your traffic is an appeal to public opinion or the sympathetic hearts of Google’s search engineers. Google extensively tests their algorithm changes to improve search quality and they don’t roll out substantial changes like this unless their internal data shows a marked improvement. Google is a data-driven company, so anecdotal reports just don’t stand up against hard numbers. Delete the scoop?

The fact that big sites get hit may indicate Google is setting examples. They are becoming stronger and stronger in finding those bad links. And even though they will never be able to catch it all, like the police will never solve all the crime, the latest developments might help in putting fear into the minds of webmasters who are considering going for the ‘quick wins’. Let's hope Google+ start allowing easier ways to curate to their platform. That would certainly help. If they did I would probably drop much of what I do with facebook. Facebook is too restricting both personally and for businesses. Reaching out on facebook will cause you difficulties with their policies.

Be Unique. Be You. Everyone out there reports the same news. When Google updates their algorithm, you can count on an influx of posts that day. Rather than just regurgitate the same info as everyone else, add your personal thoughts and insights. Tell people what the news means to you and how you plan to change things as a result of it.
