SEO is no longer about adding lines of code and putting in keywords in certain areas. It used to be the website that did this best would rank high for search. Now it's about creating content that speaks to your audience—providing them with useful information that is of value to them, and positions you as an expert in your field. Search engines are in the business of providing searchers with the most relevant answer to their question, not reward sites that are keyword optimized.

Should webmasters focus on more than just ranking in search results?

A professional spammer asks: "Since Google is been actively updating its search results, it is hard for people to trust Google anymore. Should one start focusing on getting leads from social media other than search engine results?"

Nick's insight:

"Trust Google"?!?!?!  So this guy who probably has been trying to game the system complains that he can't trust Google to let him spam the web anymore...

This isn't really news - "Google fights spam'.  But to some of these so-called SEOs who still just don't understand that Google is a search engine, and not "free advertising if you use magic keywords enough times and buy build enough backlinks on the lamest sites in the world", still feel the need to ask a question like that.

Negative SEO: Reality Check & Case Study | Real SEO | Scoop.it

Can competitors really hurt your website's ranking by building spam links to it?

Despite Google’s statement that there is no serious issue, SEO fear mongers seeking attention, sellers of negative SEO services, and webmasters who want to put the blame on anything other than their own actions still believe that it is easy to destroy a competitor’s rankings just by pointing lots of bad backlinks at the site.

What really does happen when someone points over 100K spam links at a website that does not belong to them? Ker Communications was the target of such an attack. The results may surprise you...

Multiple Domain Keyword Stuffing - Don't be a spammer!

"If you find a company you are about to hire has 3 or more domain properties, you have to ask yourself, why do they need 3 or more domains? Branding your company across multiple 3rd party platforms is an acceptable practice, for example, a Facebook page, Twitter account, third party blog platforms. But buying up multiple domain names with nothing but keywords. This is not an acceptable practice in web world. This is SPAM!"

How Google Could Use the Context of Links to Identify Link Spam

How Google Could Use the Context of Links to Identify Link Spam | Real SEO | Scoop.it
With Google’s Penguin update, it appears that the search engine has been paying significantly more attention to link spam as attempts to manipulate links and anchor text to a page.

"…we can’t divulge specific signals because we don’t want to give people a way to game our search results and worsen the experience for users, our advice for webmasters is to focus on creating high quality sites that create a good user experience and employ white hat SEO methods instead of engaging in aggressive webspam tactics."

Social Spam Filter For Search Ranking

Social Spam Filter For Search Ranking | Real SEO | Scoop.it

Time is limited for building one's social authority. Re: the Tedster quote, small to medium-sized businesses - not just the big social sites - are employing robust content protection to defend against social spam. In fact, any site can leverage the same technology that high traffic social media sites use to limit fake registrations, block fake "likes", and filter out comment spam. This technology takes big data, applies machine-learning and essentially determines a user's trustworthiness online. The implications on rankings may not appear immediately but the impact is certainly near-term.
