SEO is no longer about adding lines of code and putting in keywords in certain areas. It used to be the website that did this best would rank high for search. Now it's about creating content that speaks to your audience—providing them with useful information that is of value to them, and positions you as an expert in your field. Search engines are in the business of providing searchers with the most relevant answer to their question, not reward sites that are keyword optimized.

Are You Wasting Time Worrying About SEO Keywords? | Real SEO | Scoop.it
If you are watching your website’s rankings for a handful of keywords, and not traffic quality, sales and other conversions… you're doing it wrong.

Ahead of the Curve

This was written back in April of 2013, but seems especially relevant now. With the launch of Google's Hummingbird algorithm, many search marketers are just now discovering that natural language searches are where it's at.  A few smarter SEO providers already got it...

Should webmasters focus on more than just ranking in search results?

A professional spammer asks: "Since Google is been actively updating its search results, it is hard for people to trust Google anymore. Should one start focusing on getting leads from social media other than search engine results?"

Nick's insight:

"Trust Google"?!?!?!  So this guy who probably has been trying to game the system complains that he can't trust Google to let him spam the web anymore...

This isn't really news - "Google fights spam'.  But to some of these so-called SEOs who still just don't understand that Google is a search engine, and not "free advertising if you use magic keywords enough times and buy build enough backlinks on the lamest sites in the world", still feel the need to ask a question like that.

How to Prevent the 3 Most Common Content Marketing #Fails

How to Prevent the 3 Most Common Content Marketing #Fails | Real SEO | Scoop.it
Content marketing efforts can fail for tactical, strategic, or internal reasons, but the most common blunders involve your content strategy.

Nick's insight:

"...many companies churn out content and dub it "content marketing" without any real goals mapped out. I see this a lot with blog content, where companies decide they need to have a blog and just start churning out articles that they think are cool, not really looking at the results to determine if it's making the business money."

Totally agree and went into detail about it here: http://bit.ly/11AMilE

How Google Could Use the Context of Links to Identify Link Spam

How Google Could Use the Context of Links to Identify Link Spam | Real SEO | Scoop.it
With Google’s Penguin update, it appears that the search engine has been paying significantly more attention to link spam as attempts to manipulate links and anchor text to a page.

"…we can’t divulge specific signals because we don’t want to give people a way to game our search results and worsen the experience for users, our advice for webmasters is to focus on creating high quality sites that create a good user experience and employ white hat SEO methods instead of engaging in aggressive webspam tactics."
