The questions and commentary offered by the Her.menuetics writers of this article have implications that are expansive well beyond discussions about rape. In the end, we should be looking at this scenario and feeling quite troubled by everything that it implies. There is a culture of increasing (rapidly increasing) inhumanity. Misogyny is alive and well at the surface, in the center, and underground. Personal accountability and responsibility scarcely exist. Women who reveal that they have been raped or abused are STILL being pathologized as poor decision makers and damaged goods even in arenas where they should be safe and supported in healing and restoration. Churches and schools are notorious failures as safe havens for women who have a history of being sexually abused, violated, etc. Women become objectified or marginalized all over again because no one really wants to admit that men commit these CRIMES out of pure sin and immorality. No one wants to talk publicly about what happened and keep talking about it. Instead, they want to send the women to counseling where they can receive private coaching on how to cope. Years and years go by and the healing may never really come completely because a) the damage is REAL and PERMANENT, and b) we have convinced our culture that healing is something to be done in secret with a paid professional. Dirty, messy topics get discussed where no one can see and we can control the outrage, limit the disgust, and protect the perpetrators from being offended. #MakesMeSick!
