the edge: Salute to Librarians! Featuring Wokingham Librarian Barbara Band | Reading for all ages | Scoop.it
Elizabeth Hutchinson's insight:

Barbara Band  is a real advocate for school librarians and puts what we do so eloquently "To begin with you need the support of your school, and an ethos that recognises the benefits of reading and encourages reading for pleasure. This attitude will then filter down through the staff so that any strategies and promotions you organise will be supported, and these need to be a wide range of techniques from library lessons, book boxes in tutor groups, subtle messages around the school about reading, active encourage from all staff in all subjects, displays, author visits, etc. If a school supports reading then they are also like to have a well-stocked library staffed by a professional librarian; you cannot entice students to read without these elements"

From screen to page: Using pop-culture to encourage reading - Innovate My School | Reading for all ages | Scoop.it
A recent report on the reading habit of the nation’s children has revealed that British kids aren’t adequately challenging themselves with books. While some might see children’s affinity for movies and videogames has a distraction from reading, James Bell of Renaissance Learning is convinced that teachers, librarians and parents can use this passion to get kids onto the page.

10 Reasons Why You Should Read to Your Kids

10 Reasons Why You Should Read to Your Kids | Reading for all ages | Scoop.it
What’s the most important trait you’d like to develop in your child? If you’re like most parents, intelligence is probably at the top of your list. We all want bright, smart children, which is why we spend so much time choosing the right schools and making sure teachers are exceeding expectations. But remember: as a parent, you have the power to boost your children's learning potential simply by making books an integral part of their lives.

Books for Boys that Aren't “Books for Boys” | The Hub | Reading for all ages | Scoop.it

"I realized it doesn’t matter if a book is “for” a guy or a girl; the gender of the intended audience tends to get all mixed up when you factor in the power of a good story. Boys like stories; girls like stories. Readers in general like stories. We need to forget what we think about boys and reading and find them the stories they want."
