Dyslexia affects up to 1 in 5 people, but the experience of dyslexia isn’t always the same. This difficulty in processing language exists along a spectrum — one that doesn’t necessarily fit with labels like “normal” and “defective.” Kelli Sandman-Hurley urges us to think again about dyslexic brain function and to celebrate the neurodiversity of the human brain. Tracking Dyslexia In The Preschool Brain @TuftsGSAS @MaryanneWolf_

Tracking Dyslexia In The Preschool Brain @TuftsGSAS @MaryanneWolf_ | Reading Disabilities | Scoop.it

Maryanne Wolf, director of the Center for Reading and Language Research at Tufts University, described the work as “amazing.”

“It shows that this brain is differently organized for written language before reading ever occurs,” she said via e-mail. “It is like a missing piece in our understanding of dyslexia.”

Identifying the signs of dyslexia in the brain helps destigmatize the condition, said Wolf, author of “Proust and the Squid: the Story and Science of the Reading Brain.”

“One of the problems in dyslexia is people are saying it doesn’t exist,” she said. “When you look at these brain images you know it exists.”

Wolf said she’s optimistic that dyslexia will eventually be diagnosed before a child falls too far behind. In the meantime, she said, teachers should be better trained in how to identify dyslexia and how to help children who are struggling to read.

“We have to get our professional develop commensurate with our knowledge base,” she said.

Learning Ally Helps Teachers Maximize Audiobook Resources for Students with Print Disabilities

Lou Salza's curator insight, August 2, 2013 6:09 AM

Love what the folks at Learning Ally are doing and support them 100%! But, why do we need to prove we have a disability to access these important tools for learning? Why not facilitate the use of multiple tools for reading in every classroom for every kid?  Even if a child reads fluently on grade level, why not make audio books available so that she can listen to a book while she builds a model city?? How long will it be before educators embrace ear-reading, eye-reading and finger-reading as equally effective and make these tools equally available to all kids and all learners in all schools and circumstances??--Lou

Excerpt:

"...Learning Ally, a nonprofit providing accessible audiobooks and educational solutions to over 7,000 schools throughout the country, as well as to thousands of students and adult learners with print disabilities like dyslexia and visual impairment, has recently developed a web-based tool for educators called Teacher Ally.

The Teacher Ally tool facilitates the use of assistive technology in the classroom by allowing educators to easily access and assign audiobooks from the downloadable library of over 80,000 textbook and popular literature titles that Learning Ally provides. Teachers can manage the distribution of required reading content among their students, track students’ reading progress, share reports with parents and fellow educators, and make recommendations for additional interventions from any computer with internet access. Teacher Ally is expected to solve the problem of audiobooks being underutilized in some schools where teachers lack a system for distribution..."

Diana Durbin Koehler's curator insight, August 3, 2013 4:25 AM

I heard about Learning Ally earlier this week on LDonline.  Now that I've read this article, I like that the material is read by human voices instead of a computer generator.  I also like that students know how many total pages they've listened to.

The results could profoundly affect learning and help individuals with reading disabilities

This is a wonderful piece! Share it with your students!-Lou

"Let me introduce myself: My name is Ben Foss, and I am dyslexic.

When I was a kid, my mother read out loud to me. When I went to college, I’d fax my term papers home to her in New Hampshire so she could read them to me over the phone and help me find spelling mistakes. I know what it's like to feel lonely, and I want to tell dyslexic people—especially dyslexic kids and their parents—that you’re not alone. I’m collaborating with NCLD over the next few weeks to share some of the insights I’ve gained on my path from special education to completing my law and business degrees at Stanford, and eventually becoming the Director of Access Technology at Intel. I’ll be sharing insights that I hope will help you learn the facts about dyslexia, tell your story and build a toolkit that will allow anyone with dyslexia play to his or her strengths."
