The influence that friends exert over one another as teens is extremely powerful: The M.D.

My parents had it pretty easy with me when I was a teenager. I was a bit of a nerd. I earned straight A's in school, ran for student government and spent much of my free time watching reruns of

Optional Essay And Other Changes Coming To The SAT

Optional Essay And Other Changes Coming To The SAT | Reading and writing | Scoop.it
The top score will drop back to 1,600, and there will be no penalties if you answer something incorrectly. It's the first time the college entrance exam has been revised since 2005.
Luis Gaitan's insight:

It’s about time changes were made to the test. That being said, are they the right changes? We won’t know until 2016 when the changes are supposed to be implemented. A problem I have with the new test is the optional. Writing is slowly becoming obsolete. This is unfortunately going to contribute towards that cause. The art and skill of writing a good essay won’t be overshadowed by technology (such as computers, tablets, etc.). That is why it’s important to not forget writing techniques that one will later use in a job.

Valentine's Day: 'Alone Forever' comic finds humor in heartbreak

Valentine's Day: 'Alone Forever' comic finds humor in heartbreak | Reading and writing | Scoop.it
If you find yourself among the lovelorn this Valentine's Day, Liz Prince's graphic novel "Alone Forever: The Singles Collection" might prove a perfect remedy. "Alone Forever," out this month from T...
Luis Gaitan's insight:

Valentine’s Day is basically a big “HAHA YOU’RE SUCH LONERS!” to singles by couples. The idea that someone would come up with a sort of comic making fun of their loneliness is sort of inspiring. It sends the message that one can be happy outside of a relationship. It also helps people get through their hardships through humor. It shows them that it’s sometimes ok to laugh at yourself.

Interview with John Irving

Interview with John Irving | Reading and writing | Scoop.it
For 12 novels the last sentence has come first, and not even the punctuation has changed. From that last sentence I make my way in reverse through the plot, because there always is a plot—I love plot—to where I think the story should begin.
Luis Gaitan's insight:

My senior year of high school, my English teacher’s final assigned reading was A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving. Most of the class saw it as an excuse for the teacher to give a second semester senior homework. But after reading the book, I developed a new sense of style in and a new appreciation for writing. This book changed the way I write, but the author changed what I write about. As most people are, I was very self-conscious about my work. But after looking into Irving’s work, I didn’t care anymore. I was unchained and free.

The Greatest Living Animation Director Explains Why He's Retiring

The Greatest Living Animation Director Explains Why He's Retiring | Reading and writing | Scoop.it
In a rare interview, Hayao Miyazaki talks about why his latest movie The Wind Rises — which is opening with an English-language version in the U.S. this weekend — is also his last.
Luis Gaitan's insight:

Hayao Miyazaki is a genius. The portrayal of his stories in his movies are a representation of his mastery of storytelling. He is definitely one of my influences when it comes to movie making. Miyazaki’s stories sometimes walk the line between childish adventure and darkness, but never seem to scare, horrify, or depress the audience. He put everything he had into his career and poured it all out in his movies. If anyone were to become even half the filmmaker he is, he/she would be a great success.

A guided tour of the Cuban haunts that shaped literary legend Ernest Hemingway

A guided tour of the Cuban haunts that shaped literary legend Ernest Hemingway | Reading and writing | Scoop.it
Of all the places Hemingway lived, none had such a hold on the author as his home outside Havana—now being restored through an unlikely alliance. Here, a guided tour of the Cuban haunts that shaped a literary legend.
Luis Gaitan's insight:

I enjoy writing. It’s an exercise; it’s a hobby. But what I often overlook is the reason why I’m writing. I’m usually feeling a certain way or just watched or listened to something. What I’m trying to get at is that I write because I am inspired to do so. All writers are. Be it a beautiful Cuban scenery, or not failing a class: everyone who writes has an incentive to do so. It’s good to see people step up to preserve one of the inspirations behind arguably the most influential writer of the 20th century.
