Six words that can ruin your sentence by Dictionary.com

Six words that can ruin your sentence by Dictionary.com | Reading and Writing | Scoop.it

Well I know RT @LarryFarlow: 6 words that can like actually, literally, basically ruin your sentence | http://t.co/XlSR5duMY8 #writing

Corinne Smith's insight:

Well I know for sure my speech professor agrees. The words they refer to are all commonly used filler words. "Like" in my opinion is the worst of the six because when it is used it's rarely used properly. Another word that is commonly used incorrectly is "literally" because when saying "I literally exploded" you have to have exploded physically to be using the term correctly.

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – An Albuquerque man is charged with criminal sexual contact of a minor after investigators say he inappropriately touched a young child while volunteering in an elementary school.
Corinne Smith's insight:

I find that these types of stories have such a high chance of being fabricated out of a small accident that they are hard to believe. Especially when they are going off of a five year old's hearsay. However if it is true then I am disgusted to have these types of people in the world.  They need to have more happen then just putting in jail for a long period of time.

The Few. The Proud. The Reading Material.
Corinne Smith's insight:

The Marine Corps is trying to cover up what is happening with the Marines to the Marines. That just doesn't make sense. They should be open to their own troops and continue putting out the magazine. It seems odd that the people that once fought for our country's right for freedom of speech are now trying to take it away. However on the other hand by not sharing the bad news with the troops there would be higher spirits and less people wanting to go home early.

✌ Breaking Out of the Library Mold, in Boston and Beyond | Reading and Writing | Scoop.it
With physical and virtual visits “off the charts,” libraries across the country are thinking up innovative ways to keep users happy.
Corinne Smith's insight:

First off it makes me so happy to know that people other than myself still go to the library. I am glad the older libraries are changing their establishments to accommodate the younger generations to build places especially for teens and high school kids. Some of the libraries in my home town have renovated in the past several years. The new additions are very similar to Boston's library.

The Annie E.
Corinne Smith's insight:

This article makes me wonder what the statistics for the rest of the United Sates would be. I know people who are in their second year of high school and are not up to reading standards. Are kids being not taught properly in the beginning of their schooling or is it that reading isn't promoted at home as much as it used to? What will our kids be like?

Stop Reading for Points

Stop Reading for Points | Reading and Writing | Scoop.it
Recently I said something shocking to my eleven-year old daughter. I told her not to do her homework. More specifically, I gave her permission to politely refuse to take Accelerated Reader/Renaissa...
Corinne Smith's insight:

I've personally never had to deal with the AR program. My English teachers throughout the years didn't support it, but I had many friends that dealt with AR. Almost all of those friends didn't enjoy reading in the first place and just grew to hate it that much more. I think a lot of what kids do in middle through high school is just for points. The workbooks and reading quizzes were all skimmed or read quickly and not to understand. Schools would be better giving assignments like college classes where the grade is mostly based on the tests or essays.
