Chart of the Day: Women write about family and gender, men cover literally everything else

Chart of the Day: Women write about family and gender, men cover literally everything else | Readin', 'Ritin', and (Publishing) 'Rithmetic | Scoop.it

"When we talk about gender imbalance in the media, it’s not just about women being generally underrepresented compared to men–it’s also about what topics they’re covering. Are women’s voices present in the media conversations around the full range of important issue areas of the day, or are they still siloed into certain traditionally feminine spheres? Welp, take a look at today’s depressing chart brought to you by Foreign Policy using data from The Op-Ed Project."

Common point between BuzzFeed and Time magazine? Both started as a news clipping service. | Readin', 'Ritin', and (Publishing) 'Rithmetic | Scoop.it
BuzzFeed co-founder Jonah Peretti wrote a kind of open letter to his employees recently, in which he compared the rapidly growing viral-content empire to Time magazine.

Quoting from this letter: "Time began as a clipping service in a small office. A group of writers subscribed to a dozen newspapers and summarized the most important stories, rewriting the news in a more digestible format. BuzzFeed also started as a clipping service in a small office seven years ago. Instead of subscribing to newspapers, we surfed the web.”"

Interesting read showing how great content curation was the starting point in both stories.

Interesting point made here about content curation, with BuzzFeed comparing itself to Time magazine as they both started as a news clipping service. Which leads to the question: is there any truly unique content in the online news space?

6 Tips From Former Vogue Editor DIANA VREELAND For Content Marketers

6 Tips From Former Vogue Editor DIANA VREELAND For Content Marketers | Readin', 'Ritin', and (Publishing) 'Rithmetic | Scoop.it

Diana Vreeland - The Eye Must Travel Movie
This movie about former Vogue editor Diana Vreeland is fascinating. Stay with it as it begins slow, but it picks up momentum and ends up sharing some secrets only a Vogue editor of Vreeland's statue could ever know such as:

* When Truth & Legend Conflict, Print the Legend.
* Don't depend on others to create "legends", create epics yourself.
* Editing means creating something readers "can't get at home".
* Travel shifts your paradigm, so travel far and wide.
* Visuals must STOP and shout LOOK AT ME (never boring).
* KEEP GOING, never slow down or stop.

That last bullet speaks to Vreeland's firing from Vogue and ending up at MET as a Special Fashion Consultant for the Met's "Costume Institute" at 70.

Deanna Dahlsad's insight:

These tips, of course, depend a lot on the industry you are in, whether you need to be trusted (esp. that legend thing), but a good read.

Gay titles accused over distribution

Gay titles accused over distribution | Readin', 'Ritin', and (Publishing) 'Rithmetic | Scoop.it

AN Office of Fair Trading investigation has been launched into allegations that two of Australia's largest gay street press publishers, Sydney-based Evolution Publishing and Brisbane's QNews, had misled advertisers by inflating their distribution numbers by as much as 300 per cent.

In one case, Evolution claimed its fortnightly title Queensland Pride was distributing 15,740 copies per issue at the end of last year when only 4970 copies were going out, according to information provided to the OFT in Queensland.

Reading Into the Future | The Scientist Magazine® | Readin', 'Ritin', and (Publishing) 'Rithmetic | Scoop.it

Unlike newspapers, scientific journals are not facing the economic collapse that forces change. It’s hard to get financial data on individual journals, but Elsevier, the world’s largest publisher of scientific journals, has seen broadly stable revenues (€2,236 million in 2006, €2,370 million in 2010) but growing profits (€683 million in 2006, €847 million in 2010). Scientific journals remain very profitable. Few industries manage a profit margin of 35.7% (that for Elsevier in 2010), but then few industries are given their raw material—in this case, scientific studies—not only for free, but also in a form that needs minimal processing.

Rebuilding Playboy: Less Smut, More Money

Rebuilding Playboy: Less Smut, More Money | Readin', 'Ritin', and (Publishing) 'Rithmetic | Scoop.it
Playboy, now private, in the past few years has outsourced much of its media operations and shed some of the seedier aspects of its business, like its cable-TV channels, to focus on fragrance licensing and other revenue streams.
Deanna Dahlsad's insight:

Lots of stuff in here to ponder... From allegations of abusive behavior by the new CEO, Scoot Flanders, to news-to-me info about Playboy's bottom line being skimpier than a centerfold's outfit.
