"Kids from New South Wales judge their own literary awards each year - Australian books that inspire, amuse, terrify, enlighten and engage them most."

Marita Thomson's insight:

Get thinking about your favourite Australian books. Kids up to Year 9 nominate theirs in Term 1, read from the shortlist and vote by the end of Term 3. This is an excellent structure for a school or library book group (we did it with years 7 & 8 in 2012), or a class focus. Disclosure: I'm on the committee!

"Cybils judges are trying for books with kid appeal. They do want books with literary merit, but they must also believe that the books will appeal to kids. But the big reason you can turn to the Cybils for Readers Advisory is because of the nature of the Finalists... The panelists... are looking to build a list of outstanding books in that particular genre for the past year...they work for variety in terms of appeal, theme, protagonists, gender, and so on."

koalansw - Kids Own Australian Literature Awards

koalansw - Kids Own Australian Literature Awards | Readers Advisory For Secondary Schools | Scoop.it

"Every year, young readers from all over New South Wales judge their very own literary awards. By voting in the KOALA awards they can reward the Australian children's books that have most inspired, amused, terrified, enlightened and engaged them."

The shortlist for readers in Years 7 to 9 is a fabulous one this year. We are using it as a springboard for a new book group for years 7 and 8 boys and we have an enthusiastic starter group of 20 and growing.

For all age groups see the website.

The Inkys | Inside A Dog | Readers Advisory For Secondary Schools | Scoop.it
There is no other award in Australia that reflects what teenagers want to read. The Inkys are international awards for teenage literature, voted for online by the readers of insideadog.com.au. There are three awards: the Golden Inky for an Australian book, the Silver Inky for an international book, and the Creative Reading Prize, won by a young person for a creative response to a book they love, in any format they choose.
