Florida About to Be the First State with a Million Concealed Carry Gun Permits

Florida About to Be the First State with a Million Concealed Carry Gun Permits | READ WHAT I READ | Scoop.it

Via The Atlantic:

In the wake of the gun control debate raging after the Aurora shooting last week, we hear that Florida will soon have one million people in possession of concealed weapons. According to The South Florida Sun-Sentinel by way of The Awl, this will make the state — which is issuing between 10,000 and 12,000 "carry permits" a month — the first to reach this somewhat dubious "milestone." The state's agriculture commissioner told the paper that at the rate the state is going, it will get to a million by the next six weeks or two months.

So who is walking around with a concealed weapon in Florida? Well, 80 percent are middle-aged men:

Of Florida's 952,000 total permit holders, the majority, 243,505, are between the ages of 51 and 65. About 11 percent of all permit holders are from out of state...

Via New York Post:

He Morpheus-ed from man to woman.

“The Matrix” director formerly known as Larry Wachowski is now going by Lana after undergoing a sex-change operation, the first time a top film director has publicly switched genders.

“Hi, I’m Lana,” announced Wachowski, 47, in a movie promo in LA last week sporting a gray dress and fuchsia dreadlocks and speaking in a breathy German accent.

It’s unclear if the director’s sex change is complete, but Wachowski says she has been “transitioning” from male to female for years.

She embraced the new identity in a trailer for her new film, “Cloud Atlas,” and is credited under the name Lana Wachowski...

Mentally disturbed Palm Beach man commits suicide in federal custody just before sentencing in kidnap plot

Mentally disturbed Palm Beach man commits suicide in federal custody just before sentencing in kidnap plot | READ WHAT I READ | Scoop.it

Via Sun Sentinel:

A Palm Beach County man who pleaded guilty to threatening to kidnap a local woman committed suicide in federal custody last week just days before he was to be sentenced, one of his attorneys confirmed Sunday.

His attorneys were told that he was in custody at the Federal Detention Center in Miami when he took his own life but they have not been given details of what happened, his attorney Michelle Suskauer said.

Petersmarck, of Palm Beach Gardens, was scheduled to be sentenced at 11:30 a.m. Monday in federal court in Fort Lauderdale. He was facing a maximum of 20 years in prison but sentencing guidelines recommended six to seven years.

Psychologists and family member wrote in court records that he had a history of severe depression and suicidal and delusional thoughts they felt contributed to his criminal acts.

"I'm not sure why somebody who had this history and was on medication was not supervised more closely," Suskauer said.

A U.S. Bureau of Prisons spokesman in Washington, D.C., confirmed an inmate suicide last week in Miami is under investigation. He referred questions to detention center staff who could not be reached Sunday despite several attempts by phone...

“You’re talking about your name and I was terribly disappointed for my family, my parents, my brothers, my wife, my children to be exposed to something like that, and I stand by my statement,” Golden told the Sun Sentinel at the ACC Kickoff in Greensboro, N.C. “There will be a time when I can defend my integrity and the type of program that I run and will continue to run, but now is not the time for that. … I will also stand on my record in this business..."

The lord works in mysterious ways: Chick-fil-A’s public relations director dead of heart attack

The lord works in mysterious ways: Chick-fil-A’s public relations director dead of heart attack | READ WHAT I READ | Scoop.it

The head of public relations at Chick-fil-A died Friday morning of an apparent heart attack, according to the company.

The employee is identified as Donald A. Perry, the company’s vice president of Corporate Public Relations.

His death comes as Chick-fil-A finds itself embroiled in a public relations fiasco with the gay community and supporters of same-sex marriage protesting the company because of statements made by company president Dan Cathy.

“We are saddened to report the news to you that our dear friend Don Perry, vice president of public relations, passed away suddenly this morning,” she said. “Don was a member of our Chick-fil-A family for nearly 29 years.”

Martinez added: “For many of you in the media, he was the spokesperson for Chick-fil-A. He was a well-respected and well-liked media executive in the Atlanta and University of Georgia communities, and we will all miss him.”

Perry joined Chic-fil-A in 1983, according to information posted on the website of Hillcrest Church of Christ. He became an elder of the church in 1997.

The church biography said Perry “enjoys leading his church fellowship cell group, as well as working to help maintain harmony in the congregation.”

“One of the challenges sometimes is helping to reconcile differing views among members,” Perry said, according to the church, “but we work to keep unity of the faith..."

Miami gymnast Danell Leyva on the verge of Olympic stardom

Miami gymnast Danell Leyva on the verge of Olympic stardom | READ WHAT I READ | Scoop.it

Via Sun Sentinel:

MIAMI - Danell Leyva, whose mother brought him to Miami from Cuba as an infant in 1993, performed a flawless high bar routine at the U.S. Olympic trials last month, which Leyva won to earn his spot in London.

Leyva also won the 2011 World Championship on the parallel bars, and he is the two-time reigning national champion on both the high bar and parallel bars.

His road to London began in Mantanzas, Cuba, where Leyva was born to Maria Gonzalez in 1991. To provide a better life for her two children, Gonzalez, a former gymnast, brought Leyva and his sister to the United States through Peru and Venezuela less than two years later.

Already in Miami was Yin Alvarez, who had defected from Cuba the year before and swam across the Rio Grande to start fresh in a new country.

He started a business called Universal Gymnastics in 1995 with the goal of training gymnasts who compete on the international level.

It's an objective embodied by Leyva, who became his protégé and pupil once Gonzalez began working at the gym. Alvarez and Gonzalez later married, making him Leyva's stepfather in addition to his coach...

MIAMI - A man was shot and killed in Miami just after 3 p.m. Saturday on Northeast 45th Street near the intersection of Northeast 1st Avenue, according to police.

Two men said after hearing a shot, they ran down the street to see a man lying on the sidewalk with a gunshot wound to his neck. They said they tried to slow the bleeding down and that the victim couldn't talk because he was bleeding out of his mouth.

People who live nearby said they knew the victim who lived in the area. Workers at the Muha Market said he would come in often.

People in the neighborhood said this is an area that has always struggled with crime. However, it appeared to many that things were getting better, which is why a middle-of-the-day murder like this one is particular disturbing...
