Lutz, Florida - UPDATE: Pasco County deputies say within 45 minutes of surveillance video airing on the news Thursday, eight calls came in to detectives. One of them, Daniel Quinnell's mother. Detectives say she realized the danger to others and to himself and called deputies.
Quinnell is no stranger to law enforcement. Deputies have had contact with him 51 times and he has multiple arrests. But detectives say this time it was different because it was racially motivated. He will make his first appearance in court Friday afternoon. Detectives will request his charge be increased to a hate crime.
Quinnell's parents at one point convinced him to turn himself in overnight, but he changed his mind. That's when deputies went to the Comfort Inn off I-75 and State Road 54 to arrest him. Detectives say when he first saw deputies, he put his hands behind his back and said he was the guy they were looking for. You may wonder why he had a pellet gun. Deputies say he told them, since he was a convicted felon, he can't have a gun so he always carries the pellet gun. As for the victim, 24-year-old Cameron Christopher Mohammed of Tampa is recovering. He was shot in the face and neck. He still has two pellets lodged in his face and neck, he'll have them removed surgically next week...
