Dr. MonkeyIQ: ESP8266 and a few pins

Dr. MonkeyIQ: ESP8266 and a few pins | Raspberry Pi | Scoop.it
The new Arduino 1.6.x IDE makes it fairly simple to use the ESP8266 modules. I have been meaning to play around with a some open window detectors for a while now. I notice two dedicated GPIO pins on the ESP8266, which is one more than I really need. So I threw in an led which turns on when the window is open. Nothing like local, direct feedback that the device has detected the state of affairs. The reed switch is attached on an interrupt so as soon as the magnet gets too far away the light shines. I will probably fold and make the interrupt set a flag so that the main loop can perform an http GET to tell the server as soon as it knows when a state has changed. Probably the main annoying thing I've still got is that during boot it seems the state of both the gpio pins matters. So if the reed switch is closed when you first spply power then the esp goes into some stall state. It will be interesting to see how easy OTA firmware updates are for the device.

Mchr3k - Arduino: Wireless sensor node - software (15)

Mchr3k - Arduino: Wireless sensor node - software (15) | Raspberry Pi | Scoop.it
My home wireless sensor network has now been operational for just over a week. It currently only consists of two nodes. A base station. A single wireless RF sensor. In my last post I was concentrating on getting the base station constructed and deployed. Since then I have been focusing on enhancing the software which runs on the base station and the software which I am currently running on my own PC to download the temperature readings. The base station exposes a command driven interface over Bluetooth. The long term plan is to use a raspberry pi to download readings in real time. However, in the mean time I have programmed the base station to write readings to file every hour. These files are read over the base station command interface by my desktop application. The Bluetooth interface currently accepts all of the following commands (along with some other debug related commands): set_time_ - this allows the real time to be set on the base station. No readings are recorded until this has been set. ls - List the files in the root of the SD card. cat - Return the contents of a file. rm - Delete a file. rm * - Delete all the files. These are issued by my desktop application to fetch all of the recorded data and graph it. My intention is to upload these readings to https://pachube.com/ but I haven't got round to writing the code to do this yet. The full code for my windows application is available here.

Raspberry Pi with Adafruit PiTFT screen - DZone IoT

Just followed the steps in the tutorial to get the modified kernel installed with support for Adafruit’s PiTFT and it all worked great. What I’m going to be using it for is to monitor status output from Direwolf as it receives/sends packets, so will be running it in text mode, and ideally I want to get Direwolf and LinBPQ starting together at boot, and outputing to the console. I’ve almost got the startup script working (following suggestions here), but I might take a look to see if I can redirect output to one of the virtual terminals and have that output to the screen (like discussed here). Some more things to take a look at. :) This might be useful too: fbtext

The Soundmachines NS1nanosynth Is A Tiny, Powerful Modular Synthesizer

The Soundmachines NS1nanosynth Is A Tiny, Powerful Modular Synthesizer | Raspberry Pi | Scoop.it
The Soundmachines NS1nanosynth is a miniature modular synthesizer that’s priced about the same as one module of a full-size modular synth. It’s cheap, as modular synths go, because it dispenses with custom screen printed panels, jacks, knobs – leaving you with the essence of a modular: a circuit board. Developer Davide Mancini describes the NS1nanosynth as ‘A powerful, deep and hacker-friendly blend of a real analog modular synthesizer and an Arduino platform’. Can a modular analog synth that fits in your pocket be taken seriously?   Design & Build The NS1nanosynth is tiny – small enough to fit in your pocket, if you wear cargo shorts. But designer Davide Mancini has packed a surprising number of capabilities into the NS1nanosynth. On board the Soundmachines ‘nanomodular’ you’ll find: a saw core thermally stabilized v/oct VCO a 12db lowpass and bandpass VCF two LFOs one loopable ADSR envelope a standard VCA two adjustable attenuators; and more than a dozen “micro” modules, including mixers, multiples, sample and hold, sum/sub blocks, inverters, logic or, and, nand, analog dividers, clock dividers and fixed voltage generators. That’s a lot of features, but the NS1nanosynth also includes an Arduino Leonardo microcomputer, USB connectivity, a ribbon controller and more. The box itself is pretty unassuming. Inside, this is what you’ll find: The NS1nanosynth comes with a large collection of breadboard-style patch cables and a USB cable. It’s designed to be powered by USB, but can also be powered by a 5VDC wall wart (not included). All NS1nanosynth modulars now also come in a case, as shown at top, to minimize the possibility of damaging the circuits. The NS1nanosynth is laid out with a left-to-right flow in mind: The left side of the NS1nanosynth exposes the connections for the Arduino Leonardo. The Arduino is a user-programmable microcontroller that comes loaded with USB MIDI-to-CV firmware. This means that controlling the NS1nanosynth from a computer or iPad is pretty plug-and-play. If you want to use the Arduino to do something else, though, thousands of applications are available for it and it’s a popular developer platform. Pitch, modulation & gate CV’s are available via the Arduino headers and can be patched directly into the modular analog modular section, which is found in the middle of the nanomodular. Full connectivity is available for the Arduino, in addition to these CV’s, which means that programmers can create custom firmware to control the modular or support bidirectional connections with other devices. Finally, the right side of the NS1nanosynth has logic functions (AND, OR, NOT, NAND), a clock divider, patchable button controllers, sensor expanders and an audio out. Nanomodular Architecture The NS1nanosynth has a capable synth architecture for a microsynth. It only offers a single VCO, VCA, VCF & envelope, but each of these offer more options than most budget analog synths. For example, the oscillator offers V/Oct & CV control inputs, along with Sync and pulse-width modulation. On the output side, it offers square, triangle and saw wave outputs, along with a sub and white and pink noise. The strength of the NS1nanosynth’s architecture, though, is in its connectivity and the range of modules that it offers: Functions that we’re surprised to see in a budget analog modular include: fixed CV voltage sources, three mixers, four mults, sample and hold, clock divider, math modules and the previously mentioned logic modules. Using The NS1nanosynth The NS1nanosynth synth section is completely modular. Plug it into your computer and all you’re going to get is blinkenlights. To get any sound, you have to explicitly patch any connections that you want. Getting started with patching it is a little daunting at first, too, because there are well over 100 patch points on the tiny device. And, if you need glasses for reading, you’ll probably need them to be able to patch the NS1nanosynth, because the type is tiny and the patch points are a fraction of an inch apart. Fortunately, the NS1nanosynth manual is excellent and provides multiple example patches, like this: Once we tried the examples in the manual, the nanomodular made sense, and we started creating our own patches. Here’s a short video example that features four NS1nanosynth patches: The video documents our testing of several aspects of the synth: The first patch is a bassline sequence, sequenced by Nodal running on a MacBook Pro. This patch let us see how USB MIDI control worked (seamlessly) and also to check the stability and scaling of the NS1nanosynth oscillator. Tuning the oscillator is a little fiddly, because you’re working with a single tuning pot. But the oscillator played in scale. across multiple octaves. This patch has a short echo added to it. The second patch explores using the ribbon controller to control the oscillator’s pitch. Two tracks of this are used. The third and fourth patch try out typical old-school modular synth sounds, filtered white noise and sample and hold bleeps. In addition to the manual, Soundmachines has shared a fairly extensive playlist of videos, embedded below, that demonstrate key features of the NS1nanosynth. If you’re interested in the NS1nanosynth, these offer demos of each of most of the key modules: Here are some of our key takeaways from testing the NS1nanosynth: The NS1nanosynth is a capable little modular. The basic analog synth voice is simple (a single VCO-VCF-VCA-EG), but the Arduino and extensive collection of modules result in deep patchability and extendability. The NS1nanosynth offers many options that are unavailable on analog synths in the same general price range. The tradeoff for making it tiny and inexpensive is usability; breadboard-style patching is workable, but not as usable or fun as working with a full-size modular. The small potentiometers make fine control of patches a bit ‘fiddly’. The lack of finer controls makes it harder to tune the oscillator the way you want or to dial in the sweet spot you are looking for with the filter. The NS1nanosynth uses non-standard signals for modulars – 0-5v, which means that connecting it with other modular gear would require some special attention. Soundmachines does offer an optional NS1nanobridge expansion board that provides 14 minijack patch points for interfacing easily with other modular systems. A NS1nanosynth Experimenter’s kit is also available that’s designed for experimenting and expanding the NS1nanosynth with DIY electronics. Summary: The Soundmachines NS1nanosynth is a powerful little system that carves out new territory in the modular world. The NS1nanosynth doesn’t really compete with full-size modular synths. Both Euro and 5U synths offer much better usability and a wealth of expansion options. But the NS1nanosynth is cheaper by an order of magnitude. A Eurorack Ardcore module – comparable to just one of the NS1nanosynth’s modules – is more expensive than the entire NS1nanosynth modular. Soundmachines tiny modular is an interesting solution for situations where an expensive full-size modular doesn’t make sense. It’s an inexpensive ‘modular synth lab’, and could be a great tool in education, where you could affordably put one in each student’s hands. It’s also a great platform for music hacking, with its combination of a full Arduino and a complete modular synth. Pros: It’s a capable modular synth that’s tiny and affordable Wide variety of modules, including some less common ones Lots of patch points and connectivity options Great platform for experimentation, education and hardware music projects Cons: Tiny controls and breadboard-style patching are fiddly Small pots make dialing in the sound you want trickier than on full-size modulars Simple single VCO-VCF-VCA-EG synth voice is limiting The Soundmachines NS1nanosynth is available for 198,00€ at the SoundMachines site. If you’ve tried the NS1nanosynth, leave a comment and let us know what you think of it!

Mchr3k - Arduino: Wireless sensor node - enclosure mark 2 (follow up) (14) | Raspberry Pi | Scoop.it
At the end of my last post I had packed all of the components of my base station into an enclosure and had everyone working. Almost. The one issue I found was that whenever I was connected to the base station over Bluetooth, the base station was unable to receive temperature readings over the 315MHz RF link. This is what the setup looked like when it didn't work. In the end I posted to the Arduino forums and spoke to some friends about the issue and concluded that the Bluetooth RF must be interfering with the actual circuitry of the 315MHz RF receiver. My first idea was to try and setup some kind of electromagnetic shielding around the 315MHz RF receiver module. However, before I began working on this I decided to try simply moving the Bluetooth module further away from the 315MHz RX module. And now it works! The extra ~5cm of distance is enough to avoid whatever interference was previously taking place.

Trending Open Source Technologies

Trending Open Source Technologies | Raspberry Pi | Scoop.it
Open source technologies are in a constant state of flux and evolution. This article is meant to draw attention to emerging and trending open source technologies, giving their salient features in a nutshell. Open source technologies are evolving fast with the continuous development of innovative solutions. This article mainly focuses on describing a few such breakthrough technologies and tools under the open source umbrella. Open source in virtual reality and augmented reality Virtual reality is one of the key technologies that goes way beyond gaming into fields like nuclear reaction simulation, flight/battlefield simulation, and phobia treatment through the use of virtual models, etc. A few noteworthy open source tools are OSVR, ARToolkit, OpenSimulator, etc. OSVR or Open Source Virtual Reality (http://www.osvr.org/) is an open source project initiated and sponsored by Sensics and Razer. It is provided under the Apache 2 licence. The main components include open source hardware (HMD or head mounted display) and an OSVR framework, which is open source software that provides a standardised way of discovering and configuring various VR and AR peripherals. ARToolKit (http://artoolkit.org/) is an open source C library that aims at developing augmented reality applications. The open source project has its source code hosted over GitHub. It’s a cross-platform tool with support for Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS and Android platforms and hence is easily portable. The software makes use of various types of computer vision for robust feature tracking. OpenSim (http://opensimulator.org/) is an open source multi-platform application server (mainly written in C#), which is primarily used for simulating virtual environments. The source code is released under a BSD licence, such that it can be easily used in projects. Still under development, this .NET based framework allows many features and an inheritance based approach that makes it highly extensible. Open source in machine learning Among the most used open source tools/libraries for building efficient ML applications are Apache Mahout, Weka, Scikit-Learn, etc. Two of the most recent ML engines that have been made open source by the developer organisations are TensorFlow from Google and DMTK (Distributed Machine Learning Toolkit) from Microsoft. Tensor Flow (https://www.tensorflow.org/) is a numerical library mostly used for deep neural network based computation, where all the computations are modelled as data flow graphs. Recently outsourced by Google, the main advantages of this tool are its Python based API and easy-to-use C++ interface, and its flexibility to run on a variety of hardware, ranging from cheap commodity hardware to heterogeneous GPU based systems. DMTK (http://www.dmtk.io/) is an open source machine learning toolkit developed by Microsoft researchers. The toolkit provides a framework that can be used to train machine learning models on Big Data. Following a client-server based model, this toolkit also provides two inter-process communication libraries, MPI and ZMQ, to handle a variety of cluster environments used for model training. Scikit-learn (http://scikit-learn.org/) is a Python based tool with very active community support. The underlying compiled libraries NumPy, Scipy, Matplotlib, etc, make the tool fast and efficient. It is used for both academic as well as commercial ML development due to its versatile and simple APIs. Open source in IoT The IoT (Internet of Things) is about how smart devices can collect and exchange data that is transmitted over the Internet via other connected devices and sensors. IoT is the most talked technology around the world. Due to its advantages and popularity, most companies are moving towards solutions based on it. Considering how businesses can take advantage of open source IoT, one can check out the following options. Development tools: Arduino is one of the most preferred tools for IoT since it provides both a hardware specification and software with an IDE programming language for IoT. Refer to https://www.arduino.cc/ for more information on getting started with Arduino. Node-RED built on node.js (http://nodered.org/) provides visual tools for developers to connect together hardware devices, APIs and services for the Internet of Things. Middleware: KAA (http://www.kaaproject.org/#2) and OpenRemote (http://www. openremote.com/) are open source projects, which provide an end point SDK that can be embedded into connected devices. They support both full OSs and OS-less microchips alike, with virtually any hardware from low-powered MCPUs. Operating system: Snappy Ubuntu Core (http://developer.ubuntu.com/en/snappy/), Contiki (http:// www.contiki-os.org/ ) and RIOT (http://www.riot-os.org/ ) are the most preferred OSs. Snappy Ubuntu Core offers a lightweight and more reliable OS for IoT based applications. Contiki provides a full-fledged OS dedicated for WSN with underlying support for various hardware devices. RIOT is another similar IoT-friendly OS designed to minimise the memory footprint and enhance energy efficiency. Extensive community support leads to continuous evolution of these tools. Open source in Big Data Big Data has become a reality now, and it is important for the business continuity. The volume, variety, velocity and veracity in which data is accumulated by organisations has led to phenomenal growth not just in understanding Big Data but also better and faster analytics. Due to its popularity, a lot of open source projects have evolved around Big Data and some of the most popular ones listed below serve different purposes. Druid is an open source distributed data store originally developed to analyse online events for ad markets and to work on data streams. Apache Spark: This is a newer data processing engine used to run analysis faster on large datasets. It has support for applications written in Java, Scala, Python and R. Apache Flume: This is a service that gathers information from distributed sources that is later stored in HDFS. Apache Hive: This tool allows people to use an SQL-like language to analyse petabytes of data. Taiga: Originally developed by LinkedIn, this tool is responsible for distributed stream processing. HBase: This open source NoSQL database has been designed for backend search engines and has the ability of returning search results faster. Open source in containers Container technology has changed the way in which applications are deployed and managed. Containers provide the capability to host different isolated applications using resource isolation features of the OS. Docker is the most popular open source container technology due to its light weight and the ability to package applications with all dependencies into standardised units of software development. With Docker, the developer doesn’t need to waste hours in building a dev environment, nor make copies of production code and spin up new instances. Neither does the developer need to eliminate the environment inconsistency by packaging an application in such a way that it can run on any machine, either for test or production. This avoids the overhead of installing configs on different systems. Docker creates a common framework for developers and sysadmins to work together on distributed applications. The evolution of open source is a continuous process as many developers are continually working on enhancing the features. Sooner or later, open source solutions might become the de-facto standard for applications in many fields as they are being adopted by academia and enterprise alike.

Off-The-Shelf Hacker: How Linux Could Power Your Wearable Projects - The New Stack

Off-The-Shelf Hacker: How Linux Could Power Your Wearable Projects - The New Stack | Raspberry Pi | Scoop.it
My aging Asus duo-core notebook, the Raspberry Pi, the Beaglebone Black, several TV set-top boxes and certain in-vehicle infotainment systems all have something in common: Linux. That’s right, Linux runs on a bunch of different hardware. That’s a huge advantage for Off-The-Shelf Hackers because regardless of your platform, the operating system is the same. Oh sure, you might have different flavors of desktops, applications and command line shells. The underlying infrastructure, file-systems, and Unix-like methodology are all the same. Much like the Arduino IDE that you use to program the various generations of Arduinos, as well as, the ESP8266 WiFi chips, Linux offers a development and user environment that has become a defacto standard. Have you heard of Apple’s iOS running on the Raspberry Pi? Nope, me neither. How about Windows on a Pi. Wait, yes, there is a version for the Raspberry Pi, called Windows 10 IoT Core. While it can run headless or with a display, the experience probably isn’t quite the same as on a notebook. The various versions of Linux that run on the Pi are capable of running big applications and doing general purpose input/output tasks at the same time, without any fuss. LibreOffice is a pretty big productivity suite, like Microsoft Office. It runs on a Pi or a Linux notebook. There is also the time-tested open source graphics editor GNU Gimp. Yup, Gimp runs on Linux regardless of the hardware platform. Want more proof of the power and flexibility of Linux? Take my generation 4 Steampunk Conference Badge, for example. It’s a Raspberry Pi 2, with 1 GB of memory, an 8 GB micro-SD card and 1.8” color TFT display running on Raspbian Linux. The infamous “ozone tube” with its antique-looking glass bulb and tri-color pulsating LED “crystal” operate from the general purpose input/output pins. In this configuration, it’s considered a headless Linux machine because you interact with it over the network with SSH. SSH is an encrypted, secure application for logging remotely into a Linux machine. Typically I’d sit at my Linux-powered Asus notebook and log into the Conference Badge to change the movie playing on the little LCD, adjust the color of the “ozone tube” or edit start-up files. Pretty much everything I can do on the Conference Badge can be done on my old Asus notebook. They both run Linux. Also, it’s no big deal to hook the badge up to a big-screen LCD TV through the HDMI port along with a wireless keyboard, while I debug the system and ozone tube Python code. One idea I’ve been toying with is running my slide stack from my Steampunk Conference Badge. How much fun would it be to walk into one of my tech sessions, unhook my badge from my lapel and plug it into the projector? I could then whip out a wireless Logitech keyboard/mousepad and proceed to carry out my tech talk and floor show, right there on the spot. LibreOffice works great on a Pi 2, which is what I use for presentations (using LibreOffice Impress), spreadsheets (using LibreOffice Calc) and writing my tech articles (using LibreOffice Writer). If you want lightning-fast slide transitions, in Impress, make sure to compress images down to 250-500 KB’s or so before inserting them into your slides. Graphics are easily edited and compressed using the Gimp on either a Linux notebook or the Pi 2 itself. I like the idea of a conference badge that seamlessly converts into a slide presentation machine and I think it will definitely impress my tech talk audiences. Start thinking about how to combine the power of Linux with “wearables” and see if you don’t come up with some magical combinations of your own.

Chromium OS for All SBC Crams Chromium Onto a Raspberry Pi

Chromium OS for All SBC Crams Chromium Onto a Raspberry Pi | Raspberry Pi | Scoop.it
You can already install Chromium onto just about any computer out there, but that doesn’t include single board computers, like the Raspberry Pi or C.H.I.P. While it’s still early in development, Chromium OS for All SBC seeks to fix that oversight. As the name suggests, Chromium OS for All SBC is a version of Google’s Chromium operating system built for single board computers. Right now, that just includes the Raspberry Pi 2 and Raspberry Pi 3. That said, this project is still in the very early stages. Right now, Chromium boots, but it’s a little slow (you can see it in action via Lon.tv’s YouTube video above), and certain aspects of operating system, like Wi-Fi, don’t seem to work consistently (at least on the Pi 3). Still, if you like to cut your chops on the bleeding edge, this is a fun project to check out, even if its in its early stages. Chromium OS For All SBC

Raspberry Pi Word clock built with love #piday #raspberrypi @Raspberry_Pi

Raspberry Pi Word clock built with love #piday #raspberrypi @Raspberry_Pi | Raspberry Pi | Scoop.it
It’s no secret that I LOVE LEDs. It’s also no secret that I love 3D printing, Raspberry Pis, Laser Cutting, and woodworking (I just started a new job in an office with a full-featured wood shop). This project combines all of these things into a final product that I’m really proud of. I built it as a gift for my girlfriend, Leah. Taking inspiration from many commercial and DIY Word Clocks (example 1, 2, 3, 4, 5) that I’ve seen around the web, I built my own take on this unique timepiece. It uses words to spell out the time, occasionally displays “secret messages” in an accent color, and slowly cycles display colors for Leah’s name. First, here’s some pictures of the finished product (then I’ll go into more detail on the design process).

Pine 64 is Raspberry Pi 3 that does 4K, but you'll have to wait to get one

Pine 64 is Raspberry Pi 3 that does 4K, but you'll have to wait to get one | Raspberry Pi | Scoop.it
Pine 64 is Raspberry Pi 3 that does 4K, but you’ll have to wait to get one Forget fruit, wood is where it’s at when it comes to miniature computing – or at least that’s what the makers of the Pine 64 would have us believe, a rivaling board that undercuts the Raspberry Pi 3. The Pine 64 is now shipping to those who backed the project on Kickstarter, and it has specs in the same ballpark as the Pi 3. The basic Pine 64 is priced at just $15 (around £10, or AU$20) plus… View On WordPress
