I'm new to Arduino, and spent a solid few hours last night attempting to program an ATmega328p with bootloader using Arduino as ISP, which I never got to work. Eventually I just took the existing chip out of the UNO, put in the other one and programmed it directly onboard the UNO and it worked fine first try. Which brings me to my question.
Why bother setting up an external circuit to program an ATmega328 instead of just placing it directly on the board?

Actually it is a GPS portable unit so it can be mobile on just about any method of transportation but fat bikes traveling on wilderness snow routes here in Alaska seems to be fun use for it right now. But feel free to build one for car, snow machine, dogsled, or helicopter. My last project involved analog speedometer--https://www.instructables.com/id/Bike-Analog-Speedometer/ so I thought it would be a good project to build it into a mechanical moving map display.

The Arduino Guitar Pedal is a digital multi-effect pedal based upon the Lo-Fi Arduino Guitar Pedal originally posted by Kyle McDonald. I made a few modifications to his original design. The most noticeable changes are the built-in preamp, and the active mixer stage which lets you combine the clean signal with the effects signal. I also added a sturdier case, foot switch, and rotary switch to have 6 discreet steps between the different effects. The cool thing about this pedal is that it can be endlessly customized. If you don't like one of the effects, simply program another one. In this way, this pedal's potential is largely dependent upon your skills and imagination as a programmer.
