Automatic Control Hub for Mattress Heaters

Automatic Control Hub for Mattress Heaters | Raspberry Pi | Scoop.it
We have electric 3 mattress heaters at home. Each is turned on/off by a momentary push button. It takes ~30 min to warm up and we always forget to turn them on in time. Timed electrical outlet doesn’t work, only pushing the button turns a heater on or off.I came up with the following design to allow both automatic switching at desired times and manual override. In general this system can be used for remote control of various home devices turned on/off by toggle or momentary switches. User interface is implemented as a simplistic web server. It’s certainly a reinvention of the wheel, but I just used this as an excuse to tinker with RaspberryPi, Arduino and wireless communication modules :)

AMS-1 (Aqua Monitoring System)

AMS-1 (Aqua Monitoring System) | Raspberry Pi | Scoop.it
The Aqua Monitoring System (AMS) is an innovation in water quality monitoring technology. The AMS 1.0 is to be attached externally to the hull of a vessel and completely submerged under water, where it will sense various aspects of water quality through an interchangeable set of sensors. Potential sensors include, but are not limited to, temperature, salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, and water composition sensors. The sensors will automatically check qualities of water every few minutes; all probes are connected to an Arduino microcontroller, which is connected to a GPS tracking device. A turbine inside of the body provides the apparatus with a sufficient amount of electricity. Fisheries would be able to use the AMS to test waters for hazardous pollutants. The AMS is small in size, versatile, and open source making it the perfect apparatus for scientific research, as it is easy to interchange sensors and alter code. Currently

Moving Rainbow Arduino Sign

Moving Rainbow Arduino Sign | Raspberry Pi | Scoop.it
I am a volunteer at my local CoderDojo chapter, an organization that does software mentoring for kids 8-18. I try to get kids interested in computer science by teaching them to build fun Arduino projects that use color, motion and social project-based learning. We sit in a large room and when kids walk in the door I want them to be attracted by a colorful LED sign with lots of changing color patterns. This project is also idea for schools that have display cases that want to highlight the programming skills of students in classes or science clubs. My design goal was to build an attractive sign you could build for under $20 in about an hour. My goal is to keep the design as simple as possible with a minimum of steps.
