Online gaming as sociable media

This article begins with a review of contradictory appraisals of digital media. This is followed by a discussion of the social and semiotic contexts comprising the widely played massively multiplayer online game World of Warcraft, with a view toward better understanding its usefulness as a setting for language use and learning. This game environment is explored using three forms of evidence, (1) unsolicited reports from players appearing in player-to-player online discussion forums, (2) elicited descriptions of players' experience provided through questionnaires distributed to Dutch and American gamers, and (3) a formal assessment of the linguistic complexity of high frequency game-presented and player-generated texts. By way of conclusion, we elaborate on the necessity of an "open source epistemology" (Lankshear & Knobel, 2006) and a critical language awareness approach to developing and acknowledging a diversity of communicative practices, all of which are aimed at expanding the goals, and outcomes, of instructed L2 education.

Center for Language Education And Research (CLEAR) at Michigan State University - Rich Internet Applications | Things to Explore | Scoop.it

The RIA programs should be used as tools. There is no content in them, there is only functionality. The tools therefore can be used to support any materials. The same tool can be used by an advanced Spanish teacher, an introductory Japanese teacher, and a remedial ESL teacher. This is because the programs provide function, not content. Because all of these teachers might want to use the same function, the same tool can be used by any language teacher.

This e-book represents an ongoing exploration as we bring together space, technology, and pedagogy to ensure learner success.

Resizing and Rearranging Your Windows with Two Keys

Resizing and Rearranging Your Windows with Two Keys | Things to Explore | Scoop.it

This $2, Mac-only app allows you to drag windows to the edges of the screen where they are automatically resized to take up a quarter, half, or whole of your screen. Pulling the window out of this location returns it to its original size. It performs perfectly well, although I found it much more useful on a small laptop screen than a large desktop.

Why Investing In Faculty Is the Best Method To Promote Innovation | Things to Explore | Scoop.it

We care about innovation at our institutions. We are determined to invest our scarce resources in areas that will improve quality, increase access, and lower costs. Where should we be investing?
