How to Be Happy (Research)

How to Be Happy (Research) | random pieces of wisdom | Scoop.it
Alexandra Florea's insight:

It seems a grandiose notion to define happiness with research, doesn’t it?

Fear not, that’s not is what I’ll be addressing here—instead, I simply feel that research is a great place to start when observing the patterns of happy people.

By looking at proven ways that have increased happiness for some people, we can begin with a gameplan to change or evaluate our own lives.

Alexandra Florea's insight:

"This is not meant to be inspirational. You might never have your “great” thing that you do. I’m not even saying “it’s the journey that one should love”. Because some journeys are very painful. And nobody says you get special marks in death if you wrote a great novel at the age of 50. Or came up with a great chicken, or a way to stuff lots of people into factories. I’ve stumbled and fallen and got up and survived enough that I’m sick of goals and purposes and journeys. I want to cut out the middleman. The journey. The desperation and despair that thinking of a “purpose” entails. Fuck purpose. It’s ok to be happy without one. You don’t need to pay with lots of unhappiness to buy happiness."

The Vitamin Myth: Why We Think We Need Supplements

The Vitamin Myth: Why We Think We Need Supplements | random pieces of wisdom | Scoop.it
Nutrition experts contend that all we need is what's typically found in a routine diet. Industry representatives, backed by a fascinating history, argue that foods don't contain enough, and we need supplements.
Alexandra Florea's insight:

Researchers have called this "the antioxidant paradox." Whatever the reason, the data are clear: high doses of vitamins and supplements increase the risk of heart disease and cancer; for this reason, not a single national or international organization responsible for the public's health recommends them.

Alexandra Florea's insight:

"here is a tribe in Africa where the birth date of a child is counted not from when they were born, nor from when they are conceived but from the day that the child was a thought in its mother’s mind. And when a woman decides that she will have a child, she goes off and sits under a tree, by herself, and she listens until she can hear the song of the child that wants to come. And after she’s heard the song of this child, she comes back to the man who will be the child’s father, and teaches it to him. And then, when they make love to physically conceive the child, some of that time they sing the song of the child, as a way to invite it."
