Down the Rabbit Hole in Italy

Down the Rabbit Hole in Italy | rakarekodamadama | Scoop.it

Coming into Italy is falling into Wonderland. Some things are too big, some things too small, some pieces of American life are missing, some colorful things added, and everyone is a character.
It is a distorted mirror; at first, everything may seem normal—it is, after all, a developed country on par with the United States. But then the façade begins to shatter and a real world—a world so very different emerges.

The first thing to notice is the size. Cars are smaller (otherwise they could not park anywhere), people are shorter, cities are closed into tinier spaces. The shops are smaller, miniature ones filling in the medieval structures still standing.
Cafés and Tobaccherie (tobacco shops) rule the land, interspersed with hundreds of independent stores selling clothes and fruit and shoes and bread and hose and watches. These wonders—these independent shops with familial atmospheres—collectively take the place held by large corporations like Wal-Mart in the United States.
Another appliance gone missing is the dryer. Instead, clothes are left to hang for a day to air-dry.

While Italy has some quirks, it is just as functional as the United States. I love browsing little shops and food markets and sitting in a café that is not Starbucks, have learned to light a stove and cook without a microwave, and have gained enough resistance to walk to the third floor of Ballantine without losing my breath.

“The idea of a ranch house was to do away with some of the more rigid, formal approaches to a middle-class house,” says Robert Benson, professor of architectural history and theory at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.

Seems as if the love of the furniture is bringing back a hope and resurgence of empathy for the Ranch Style homes that dot developments accross the country...remains from the post war era. In fact, Georgia’s Historic Preservation Division recently launched a campaign to document the history and significance of the ranch house in the state.

Do you think the "Ranch Style" deserves love and respect and preservation efforts?

This story hits home for me, literally! I inherited an architects home built in 1969. My uncle studied at IIT in Chicago under the great Mies van der Rohe. Yes, less is more, and the "outside views" are a huge factor in the interior aesthetic. Yes it is a big rectangle and a flat roof and it is a very special example of MCM architecture.

This article speaks for itself and the photos and comments are insightful.

[exclusive interview] Stina Rapp Wastenson (Women MM, Elite Stockholm and Modellink) | via inoubliablemodelarmy.com | rakarekodamadama | Scoop.it

"There are pretty girls and than there are models like Swedish newcomer Stina Rapp Wastenson whose incredulous beauty is so blinding that one could easily be forgiven for mistaking her for an otherworldly being. Eighteen year old Wastenson possesses a "Pretty Baby" Brooke Shields like quality that is simply breathtaking in its magnificence. Blessed with a sumptuous pillowy pout, dreamy baby blues, and angular features which the camera adores, Wastenson has quickly ascended modelling's ranks posing for key industry figureheads Peter Lindbergh, Patrick Demarchelier, and Mert & Marcus. Wastenson was scouted less than a year ago at a music festival in Sweden and has wasted little time in scoring lucrative runway spots for the likes of Prada, Balenciaga, Louis Vuitton, Chloé, Roberto Cavalli, Valentino, Salvatore Ferragamo, and Viktor & Rolf to name but a few. Wastenson's impeccable runway show list is matched by her stunning editorial resumé which includes appearances in the French, Italian, Japanese and Turkish editions of Vogue, Interview, Bon, and Love. With representation by Modellink in Sweden and Women in New York, Wastenson displays a stunning versatility and chameleon-like quality on film that is often lacking amongst models in possession of such astounding beauty. Wastenson took time out to bring Inoubliable Model Army up to speed on her whirlwind journey since being discovered, and shared her insights on beauty and the importance of staying to to one's self."

Best Le marche Accommodation: Locanda della Valle Nuova, Sagrata di Fermignano

Best Le marche Accommodation: Locanda della Valle Nuova, Sagrata di Fermignano | rakarekodamadama | Scoop.it

You can’t help wondering what a woman like Giulia Savini—fluent in three languages and with two international master’s degrees—is doing living in Le Marche raising white Marchigiana cows and pampering guests on her 185-acre farm. But Savini and her parents, who also live on site, are as passionate about the environment as they are about hospitality. A short drive from the Renaissance town of Urbino, their 1980’s farm, with six modern guest rooms and three apartments, is as eco-conscious as it gets: crops are strictly organic, the stove is fueled by tree prunings, and electricity is generated by photovoltaic panels on the roof. If you don’t care for morning horseback rides or excursions to artisanal producers, stay here for the food. Loyal to her Piedmontese roots, Giulia’s mamma, Signora Adriana, makes an unforgettable beef bollito misto as well as a rich tagliatelle, made with eggs from her henhouse, that’s tossed in a deep-flavored wild-boar ragù. The best she saves for last: some two dozen house-made liqueurs culled from the pantry, crammed with colorful jars of elderflower and sour-cherry preserves.

The Architectural League of New York | An Open Letter to the Museum of Modern Art

The Architectural League of New York | An Open Letter to the Museum of Modern Art | rakarekodamadama | Scoop.it

The Architectural League calls on the Museum of Modern Art to reconsider its decision to demolish the American Folk Art Museum. The Museum of Modern Art—the first museum with a permanent curatorial department of architecture and design—should provide more information about why it considers it necessary to tear down this significant work of contemporary architecture. The public has a substantial and legitimate interest in this decision, and the Museum of Modern Art has not yet offered a compelling justification for the cultural and environmental waste of destroying this much-admired, highly distinctive twelve-year-old building.

An Artist’s Residence In The Heart Of Tuscany

An Artist’s Residence In The Heart Of Tuscany | rakarekodamadama | Scoop.it

Ever thought of yourself as the next Michelangelo? Then Residenza D’Arte nestled into the heart of the Tuscan countryside may be just the place for you to flourish. Accompanied by rolling hills, cypresses and olive trees, this may well be an artist's paradise, as we discover.
Although it has not been revealed whether the artist is of any significance or more of a talented amateur, what is most immediately apparent about Residenza D’Arte (The Art Residence) is its warm heart – an asset that has apparently allowed the artist to flourish as a creative person in their own space. Indeed, with its combination of rustic exterior and mellower interior, it is easy to see why she chose this charismatic piece of real estate.
Residenza D’Arte is located in the central Italian province of Siena, a 20-minute drive from one of the country’s best waters, Lake Trasimeno, a popular tourist resort. That the village – Torrita di Siena – lies at the heart of rural Tuscany and can trace its origins to beyond the Middle Ages sounds persuasive enough; but its attractiveness appears to be compounded when one considers that the estate is superbly situated on a hilltop and is surrounded by cypresses and olive trees.
